I can't play it because I'm on a mac, but you might wanna change the name. Right now it makes you think of cheesy emo poem. Bad vibes and stuff, you get me.

it is a bit bland and faceless i'll say that. i thought about that and i think it suits it pretty good though because most of the details are vague. things like what your characters name are isn't relevant. but what is relevant is that you are Dark and alone... Cold and hungry... (because those things will reflect the gameplay directly)

as for it being "emo" i don't really care... a nameless man who is completely alone in the dark fighting hunger might very well be considered that but that also isn't very relevant as to whether or not it's a good game :P

Feedback:
Spoiler: ShowHide
(a0.01) This current version is a test version and a shell of the overall game planned. It does not have a ton to it at the moment. Hopefully it gives you a good idea of the atmosphere and gameplay I am going for!

Known bugs - sometimes the attack animation goes off too many times

Things to improve - load/save screens are the default RMXP ones and not very good
(easy to make mistakes). Going to look into changing these for the full release

Currently the inventory menu is very basic - for example if you have more than one piece
of meat it will just say "Meat" instead of "Meat x2." This is because it is event based
and I simply wanted the game to be functional in this early state.

If you find any bugs or errors please feel free to post here! Likewise if you have any constructive critisicm or suggestions regarding the gameplay!

If you really like the girl there is not much you can do about it but the other guy might like her just as much so it really becomes her choice. But there are many fish in the sea and I don't see why you would choose to go after someone who is already taken. so you would have to really like this person for that to be worth it and for that you need to know the person

You're making it seem like it's normal if a girl jumps from relation to relation all the time, while I think it's actually the opposite.

No, not all the time. As I said, a girl could be a few years in a relationship and then jump to the next one when something better comes along.
I don't judge them for that, it's just the way they are. That's what experience has shown me and I accept it the way it is. Heck, it often even works to my advantage. :V:

that might be how it works out with girls sometimes. but that is also what guys do too if they are not happy. either way it might be the "human" thing to do, giving in to your emotions, but it doesn't mean it's the "right" thing to do. you are still a pretty horrible person if you lead someone on for years like that. especially if you go about it messy which is almost inevitable in that situation

im not saying that they should lock them up and throw away the key but unless it is to get out of an abusive relationship (and that has it's own set of problems) there is no possible scenario where you "jump to someone else because they are better" and not be a total immature jerk

"we have reached a point where we both want something else and agree as adults" not "theres this person who is better than you and so yeah"........ this is assuming you are actually having an adult relationship :P

but honestly if the relationship was that one sided that the girl is actually pursuing plans to find someone better then it probably wasn't going to work out in the first place. i'm realistic enough to admit that everyone thinks about what it would be like to be with someone else. i am of the opinion that if you really love each other you can clear those thoughts and get over them, not pursue them

edit: also i find it pretty hilarious here we are a bunch of super nerds trying to talk about and classify "love"  :haha:

Don't worry about having sex, stay busy doing the things you enjoy. It took me until I was 22 years old to find my first meaningful relationship and if anything I consider myself lucky to have waited to have sex with someone that I have now stuck with for over a year. There is absolutely nothing wrong with waiting that long and you aren't going to feel bad about it trust me

That said there is also nothing wrong with not waiting that long, either. People are different. I for one am an introvert and enjoy being by myself, so it worked out fine

It's more to do with being young. If you are still young and you have life to experience. You don't need to settle down and find someone right away, you have your whole life. When you are young you aren't ready for a "relationship" and thus you won't even know were to begin

The best and easiest way to scale pixel art without losing quality for me is with paint. Photoshop blurs pixel art when you resize it (maybe you can turn this off?)

Just paste your sprite into paint go to Image > Resize by Percentage and then change from 100% to 50% or whatever you need. You will have to edit out the background colour to make it transparent but that's not too much work

edit: this was already answered but meh  :haha:

Resources / PNG Optimizer
November 11, 2011, 01:25:09 am
Wasn't 100% sure where to put this but it is a great RPG Maker resource so I hope here is ok :).

I found a .PNG optimizer that is free and very simple to use. It will reduce the file size of your images without any noticeable change in image quality. It dropped my project size by over 12 mb. I know that image compression is already mentioned in this guide: http://forum.chaos-project.com/index.php/topic,41.0.html but I thought this little program is very useful way to get your filesize down while keeping quality

I use Guitar Pro 5 to write most of my songs (I like the layout better than Guitar Pro 6). Works really good! You can even use scale guides if you are a beginner

Looks pretty good for a modern city. My world is dystopian so being messy only helps, yours looks more like reality if that's what you are going for. Still, most cities get dirty, once you have the rest of those squares filled you should scatter some garbage/trash cans around. Get some fog going (or atleast a little screen tint) and some weather and walk around the map looking for anywhere that looks "empty," then fill that spot with something, even if it's just a chunk of concrete on the ground. Also try to keep track of how far apart the debris is. You don't want two of the exact same types of garbage right beside each other

You can also try editing that white ground tile to have a few variations (maybe darker if it's under a fence?). So that you can add dark spots around the edges or around buildings etc. Try and get rid of any areas where there are too many white tiles bunched together. Too much of the same ground tile in one area is never good imo

here's a quick image showing what I mean, the blue side has a different ground texture below the building making it look more seamless:

@brendan: Just out of curiosity, how long did that map take you to make?

If you mean the map in my first screenshot that is the map you start in after the beginning cutscene and it is fairly large. So I am still adding stuff to it and have been for a couple months now. As for how long it took for the initial layout... maybe 4-5 hours?

Here is a screenshot of the whole map:

Just finished a teleporter system that allows you to place a beacon anywhere you want in the game and create a link between that location and your home base. When you interact with the beacon you can also pick it up and place it somewhere else instead

Spoiler: ShowHide

Spoiler: ShowHide

It ended up that I needed a switch for every single map in the game and a condition page that will disable the beacon from turning on if it's already placed on any other map. I will have to do this for every beacon since I plan to allow the player to have multiple teleporters :P :)

Sorry for the necro but the links for this are dead. Any chance you still have these files hanging around? I would love to see how a high score system like this works and because of the licenses I won't be able to use the one that works with RMX-OS (considering selling an advanced version of my game for a modest fee)

Really impressed with those TO THE MOON videos! Very nice looking game! I especially like the fluid movements of all the characters while they run around talking! Definitely raises the bar and makes me want to strive towards my game being even better :)

this is also my first post! so let me say hello. I have been using the information and resources on this website for a while now, about time I join in
