That's a shame :/ While I'm not particularly fond of pirating, I end up doing it just like everyone else. Though I never pirate games anymore, since steam is so convenient. And most of the movies, tv shows, or anime I torrent, I either already have or plan to buy physical copies.

But that's because I make money now. When I first got into college, there was no way I could have afforded even something as cheap as netflix. And it didn't even have all that much on it to begin with at the time. I don't think pirating is the great evil big companies make it out to be. I ended up becoming a paying customer once I had a source of income. But I probably never would have even gotten into anime or other forms of media consumption without piratebay.

And I totally agree with Winkio. There should be a student version of productive software. It shouldn't be usable for commercial work (to a point, anyways), but companies should still let people learn how to use their stuff before expecting a huge payment. (I'm looking at you, photoshop :P) I think Unity does this really well, and is probably a big part of the platform's popularity.

Golden actually adds an epilogue and an entirely new character's route. I've heard it adds extra cutscenes to the existing characters, but I'm not sure. But I think MOST of the after-the-final-boss cutscenes you get are unique to golden (like the skii-trip).

I agree with the Danganronpa recommendation. It's a really fun game :) I'm a semi-big fan of JRPGs, but I can't get into the Neptunia games. I see the style of humor they're attempting. But the problem is they're just not very good at it :/ I end up cringing at all the jokes, and not in a good way. The whole experience of Neptunia games is just painful to me :P So I'd not recommend that. I can't really speak to the rest of the games on there (though I remember enjoying Final Fantasy X when I was younger, I haven't played it recently enough to give an accurate critique).

I spent awhile thinking about good ways to generate interesting characters, and I came up with a system that might work. I'm thinking that in addition to personality archtype, they should have different personality traits in each category to draw from. To keep the characters memorable though, the amount in each category would need to be controlled (as well as the total number allowed). I haven't really nailed down what categories I think you should use, but I have some general thoughts.

In addition to the NPCs having them, the main character should have a set of personality traits to pick in each category. This way, you can draw on elements from their past and personality.

I think you need at least a section for political/religious views. With each trait in this category, there should be a Boolean for if they actually follow their belief. For example, a character who believes that all sex is wrong, but has sex themselves, would get very angry at anyone who has sex. You should also have a boolean for these traits as to whether the character actually believes their belief, or if it's something they have convinced themselves that the believe. These two things would be used in gauging the reaction a character would have to various situations. (and would probably be easy to code. You have it generate a different value for each emotion based on the flags in different sections, and their contained Booleans. Whichever emotion was strongest would be what determines which reactions the character pulls from it's archytpe's dialog bank)

There also needs to be a past triumphs section, as well as a past indiscretions/dark secrets section. Every character has a past, and if the player gets to know the characters, the events in their past need to be mentioned by the NPC. Each of these should have a shame and pride value (some people are ashamed of their accomplishments, and proud of things others would consider horrible).

Past that, the ideas I have are just floaty bits in the back of my head. But I think with a lot of thought, it could be condensed to the point where you could make interesting characters without needing a novel's length of dialog for each possible personality trait for each archtype. That would leave whoever's writing the dialog free to really put a lot of effort into each of the dramatic points, or the banter.

I really hope you move forward with this. I'd really like to be a part of it XD

@WhiteRose, Oooooh, that's a good idea. I like the idea of sequels. I just kinda figured the player wouldn't age and the story wouldn't span long enough for sequels to be necessary. I think after a major story ark has been concluded, the system should have some sort of algorithm in place to decide how much time should pass till the next arc of the story, and which characters survived and are still around. The amount of bonding the player did with them should play a big role in whoever makes the cut for the sequel.

And I've been studying creative writing since I was a wee lad. I used to be an english major (I switched to computer science because you can make more money with it). So if you want any help with the story generation, feel free to hit me up :) I'm not good enough at code to implement any of it, but I can give you plenty of advice on story and scene structure.

Jailbreaking gives you access to Cydia. It allows apps not approved by google, and allows apps certain abilities that the default OS won't give them. But I've never found much use for it, lol.

I've been wanting to do this sort of thing since I was a wee lad!

The main problem is coming up with a way to procedurally generate the story. It's easy to imagine generating a story from the big picture standpoint (have different plot archtypes, then select randomly from a list of objects and living NPCs to fill the various roles). But it'd be hard to make said stories INTERESTING. Let alone get them from being repetitive after 20 hours or so. Plus, as they say, the devil is in the details. Almost every popular story can be boiled down to a very small set of plot archtypes. And yes, they do have different nouns inserted into the framework. But it's not the story structure, but the little scenes, that make it. And the characters. So having a good NPC personality engine would be key, as well as a very nuanced "small scene" generator.

Then you'd have to try and factor player choice into your story engine.

If you can ever make this idea work well, you'd have made the perfect game. So I wish you luck on your endevour. Though I'd start on something that only requires a very simple procedurally generated story. Like a procedurally generated dating sim where you take control of your kid, and he dates procedurally generated girls. Dating a girl in a sim usually happens in a vacuum, so it'd be easier, and would give you some good experience with randomly generating stories.

Plex is completely free too :P Just some makers of apps (the iPhone one for example) choose to charge for their plex app. Though I might check out Media Browser.

For me to change over, it would have to:

a. Handle mkv files with multiple audio and subtitle tracks well. (I mainly watch anime, and they're often encoded funkily and with lots of language tracks)
b. Have an Amazon Fire TV app (I used to use Roku, but it HATED my router. For it to stay connected, I would have to reboot the router every hour or so)
c. Have options to handle overscan. (My TV is a little on the old side. It cuts off about 2 inches from the sides and bottom of the picture in the mode that shows the most. But the fireTV plex app allows me to compensate for this)
d. Keep track of what episode in a TV show I'm on and remember at what point in the episode I last watched.
e. Automatically download metadata from the internet (Episode titles/descriptions, show/movie summary, artwork, etc)

P.S. Plex seems to let me edit the metadata. I can edit any of the information it downloaded from the internet.

@Blizzard, It used to be pretty hard back when I did it with a second generation iPod touch XD Though pirating apps has always been a bit of a hassle, even on jailbroken devices. I don't think it's worth slowing down your OS, and the time investment to save a few bucks.

@Gameus, I used to use PS3 Media server as well XD It was awful compared to plex. Did you know your PS3 can see your plex library as if it's a PS3 Media server?

Aye! It always baffles me that they don't release more AAA JRPGs on PC. Do they not realize the kind of people that use PCs? XD We're usually the type who enjoys thinking through numbers and such.

And I agree with ya on the battle system, Blizz. I don't enjoy turn based battles very often (Paper Mario is an exception), so seeing a final fantasy game go the way of an ABS makes me happy :D

You could spend a couple hours jailbreaking (and potentially breaking if you mess up) your several hundred dollar piece of technology. Or you could just spend 3 bucks :P

How it works is you install plex, tell it which folder to look for your media in, name the media properly (with the proper sub folders), and you can access it on your iphone as long as the computer running plex is online. If you have a good enough internet connection, you can even access it from outside the house. But I only use it when I'm on the same network as my server PC. It should only take you a couple hours to setup. If you get a lot of lag on your videos, you'll need to buy yourself a better router. I'm using a router that cost me about $60 and it works fine, so you won't need to break the bank for this lol.

It's called plex :P Super easy to install! As long as your router is half decent, you too can live in an enchanted wonderland. (best of all, plex is free. Though I think the iPhone app cost me a few bucks)

Every time I get an amazon prime trial, I realize how awesome it is to live now. This week alone, I was able to get a wiiU at a good price with two games ($300 for the wiiU, mario kart 8, and nintendo land), a screen protector, an awesome NES skin for it, new controllers, etc. I got free two day shipping, but with amazon prime, overnight shipping is about 4 bucks. I also got a windows 8 tablet (venu pro), an HDMI splitter for me tv, and a few retro games for my N64. All from the (dis)comfort of my computer room chair. Last time I had a prime membership, I ordered all the parts for a new computer and built it the next day. Prime usually gives you great discounts, so I freaking love today. I can download anime or watch it on crunchyroll within an hour or two of when it airs in japan. I have a personal media server running through my house so I can watch any of my movies or tv shows from any device.

When you start a movie on your computer, switch to your tablet to watch it on bed, use your phone to continue it on the toilet, then watch it on the TV without ever having to search for your place, you know you're living in an enchanted wonderland :P

@Zexion, this company is US based. So eBay gives them a lot more leeway with negative feedback. A lot of the feedback was them refusing to give refunds for defective items, so they're not too worried about strikes against them. But if they're based outside the US, MAN do they bend over backwards. Once I ordered a set of keyblade keychains from china. It took them a couple weeks to send it out, so to apologize they sent me two sets XD And I didn't even contact them about it.
