Aveyar's heart sunk as she spoke. Most likely, it was someone she'd fallen in love with long ago. He was torn, he wanted to help her, protect her, and make her like him. But then again what good was it going to do him if he took her to another man.
You're pathetic.Aveyar resisted the urge to clench his teeth. Why was he so indecisive and weak lately? If the woman found another man, what was it to him? He'd have a kingdom soon enough, and then he could forge his destiny, and get a better life than the one that had been stolen from him. Matters of romance came second.
Letting your emotions override your judgment will kill you. He'd had that lesson pounded into him the hard way. You can't trust anyone, especially not with your heart. It would only lead to pain, and possibly death.
Aveyar stepped away, his face taking on a cold impassive expression. As he spoke, his voice was, as it usually was, cold and emotionless.

Of course, that was a lie. But he wouldn't let the woman any closer to his heart unless he knew he could trust her. He needed to be wary, especially when she effected his emotions like this. But as he looked at her, this resolution was very hard to keep. He wasn't sure how well he'd be able to act on reason alone with her around.
