This thread is not a place for me to defend my own decisions for my game or my own systems, I recognize that NAMK is not talking about me directly, is not pointing fingers, and is not directly criticizing anybody, and I will not take this thread as such or react in such a way that it appears I believe as such, if I attempt to do so I give NAMK permission to molest me with his mod powers :V (but seriously, don't do that here).

Copying, modifying, duplicating, fan games, tributes, what have you.  I'm getting kinda tired of it.

I can understand borrowing music as that's an extremely difficult resource to create, however, using FF7's battle theme in your 'original' game is not a way to win points with anyone but FF7 fanbois/fangirls.  Or using graphical choices like Hearts for a health meter, which was used in every single LoZ game to date.

Using Touhou characters or CGs from other games or visual novels for an 'original game', or nearly copying a storyline or concept, changing a few names and some graphics, and calling it yours.

As you can tell, I'm not a fan of copying at all.  Inspiration is one thing, resourcefulness is another, but when I see games using graphics and music and stories and etc... from huge franchises or well-established titles it really bothers me.  To quote VG Cats: "But with more people playing games, doesn't that mean we get more games to play? NO.  Instead we're getting bastardized versions of what were once classic games.  A perpetual easy mode filled with quicktime events and mini-games."  I could not agree with this statement any more than I do right now, and seeing the flood of RM games with such a severe lack of originality is disheartening.  I want to see the industry give me something new, interesting, a challenge, rather than the same old crap that somehow sells to impressionable franchise-worshippers.

tl;dr - stop copying your favorite games, being inspired and making similar games is one thing, ripping them off is another.

I agree with you there. People simply take too much from other games. Inspiration is good, but copying is bad. :/

You strike a good point there.

Now I am off to play FF7.

So that I can make a total ripoff of the EXACT same game and call it my own.

I'm making a Fable game would that be copying? Its got most of the same Features and Systems but its going to have a different story, 2-D, different classes and characters. More spells and summons than the other Fables had.

Would it be copying? Its more of a game based off of Fable if anything.

fugibo

Good post. I agree with everything accept for the Hearts thing, and that's just 'cuz I don't really consider that a rip-off, but to each their own.

And who likes FF7's music? I dunn. :V

I believe he was merely asking if incorporating elements from a game that is exceedingly good (such as Fable) is really that bad, so long as it only copies systems from the gameplay. ;)

It would be considered a fan game I do believe. But if you finish it and it is actually really good then I don't see what the problem would be. I think he means the games that take the exact same characters, concepts, story, universe. That pretty much it all is the same.

If you do use concepts from other games then modify them. Make them your own ideas. Instead of having a limit break system where whenever you get hit your limit break builds, and it is actually called limit breaks, have it be something totally different or just expand on it. Maybe in order for it to activate you must have a certain item in your inventory. Or even that it requires you to spend X amount of turns charging before it activates.

Your Fable game G_G if it just uses similar concepts. In a totally different universe, different story, and characters. Just expand or change some other things that were in Fable to fit your game or just to make it different and more interesting. Use your own music, or music that was not in Final Fantasy, LoZ, Fable, Halo, or any other game. Use your own character designs or if you are not that creative use something as a base and add and subtract until you come up with something that is original. Don't make the hero of your game use a Giant Sword, don't make your main antagonist be psychotic, unless it would fit the story. And if you get stuck on something that you would like to grow upon you can always ask someone here. Most of us will help you if we can.

Just felt like saying what I had to say. Even though I think that I repeated myself multiple times or I am sure that it makes no sense. But all well.

It's real life...Yeah, really.

What many people are great at doing are making clones. Well, I can't say that's the whole consensus or whatnot for the world, but I really do mean it. Why create clones of an original? Well, it's easy to manufacture once you know how to create one, and all you really need to do is just make a workaround or something so it won't hit any copyright minetraps (Of course, this is null if the fellow forgot the patenting and whatever :P).

Original content simply earns a + for me. If I see something familiar, it takes me out of the atmosphere. It's a little sad to see your own personal work get used by someone else without credit or whatever, but it's real life.

I'm rambling. Crap that. None of this beeswax makes sense; I should stick to the whole...I don't know what I should stick to.

What's osu!? It's a rhythm game. Thought I should have a signature with a working rank. ;P It's now clickable!
Still Aqua's biggest fan (Or am I?).

I didn't spam they did.

My point was that it really doesn't matter what most people think, and sometimes it's better to not complain at all. There are still going to be fangames and people will still use FF music. It's a fact. Just ignore what you don't like.

Valcos

Yeah, guess you are right Dio. But, I still think what Namkc is saying is right too... :O.o:. I ranted about this before, i think?

He can be right, but what can he do? Inevitable actions will be taken by thr RMXP community to mimic the games that inspired them to make hteir own. Even with "good" games, features are jsut a jumble of others from comercial games, blened until they are barely able to be concieved as such.

Blizzard

Dio's right. But people want other people to play their games. If they copy too much from other games, most people won't want to play it. I wouldn't want to play it. If you want me to play your game, make something good and new.

general features from commercial games are one thing.  Ok so it's an ABS like Legend of Zelda, fine, or there's an Overdrive system like [insert 20+ someodd RPGs in the world] sure.

But jeez, don't copy -everything-.  Come up with something yourself, some new and unique feature, an interesting mechanic or something.  And in case you're wondering, I consider copying to cover "well he was named [ x ] in the game I got the CG from and he didn't date [ y ] in that game he dated [ z ] so my game is original."

and I understand how hard it is to find resources for games, but how many times have I seen "hey were can I have Cloud Strife spirit for my gmae plz thanks"?
far far too many.

Lastly, about fangames, that's a whole new animal unto itself, because most fangames are utter trash and don't do their respective sources justice.  If I find a good fangame, then awesome, great job (so long as it's actually somehow NOT the same freaking game as its predecessor), but usually, fangames are either trash or are never finished, so I consider that as much a crime as copying.

He specifically asked about 'his' fable game.  I'm not addressing people's projects in here.  This isn't a place for me to reassure people that their projects fit my standard or for me to tell them that it's utter crap either.  I'll do that in their thread if I feel like evaluating.

Of course, Namkc can only take a sarcastic comment seriously, even when a more serious and detailed post was given. He even can quote a post responded to the latter and still ignore the points brought up in it. Brilliantly done.

[oftopic] I find that one of the biggest problems with the internet is that people can't seem to read sarcasm through text [/oftopic]

[ontopic] I agree if people are going to make fan games they need to put effort into it, not a little effort here and there but true effort enough to make the person playing it to think "wow this person knows how to make even a fan game original!" or better yet make a original game that DOESN'T try to copy ever major RPG in existence!  :P
