I also think that FFX has almost no emotion. I'm not expecting a happy-end-kiss-kiss story, but was there EVER an FF where in the end everybody died? Was there ever a tragic ending? No. I don't remember any. The stories of later FF games are just too predictable. Sure FF7, FF8, FF9 were all nice, but they were all going towards a predictable pattern already. And FFX was the peak of emotionless bad acting. Really, the game seems to me like a bad movie and most actors couldn't act. The characters are boring, one-sided without any depth.
Take Seymour for example. He wants to be a god. Why? "BECUZ I'M EVIL, LOLZ" Seriously, he a total wuss. Sephiroth (even though he's a cheap ripoff of Kekfa) at least was freaking pissed that he was just genetically engineered and went berserk. What does Seymour have? Nothing. Kuja had become incredibly strong only to escape his own fate and to deny his destiny. Heck, that guy was running away from something. Many people can relate to that. What does Seymour have? Yeah, he's a politician, who cares.
Another example is Tidus. He's a freaking child. He's a totally pure pure of pureness hero without even the trace of a sin. That's boring. You don't become like Tidus when you have problems with your father. There is a complete personality mismatch and the character makes logically no sense.
Yes, Lulu was emo. Just look at the clothes.

And she was really annoying when acting like an emo. But other than that she was alright. At least a mature person.
Rikku was the complete opposite of Lulu, but only in personality. She sucked pretty much, yeah. She was like Tidus. Just a slightly little bit more of mischievous. But that's already it. Copy-paste personality + 5% playfulness. Also, "alchemy" exists since FF5. It's not new.
I agree on Auron and Kimhari, though. They had depth. They were no children.
I'm not talking about gameplay, I'm talking about story. Sure, gameplay is nice and all, but it all comes back to FF gameplay + 2 new features + 5 new minigames.
And Aeons are new? OMG, I had no idea nobody ever, ever utilized a pet system where you could give your pets commands. Really.
It might be something new that you can control a summon directly, but that doesn't excuse all the other bad stuff.
I've played all except 3 and X-2 (I don't count XI here). I know what I'm talking about.
@impulszero: Oh, I didn't play FFXII much. I played only at a friend's place for a few hours. From what I saw, I liked it, though.
