Public schools in the US and the internet

how many of you people have the internet filter at your school in ways that surprise you?
my school changed it so their wireless only worked for authenticated MAC addresses meaning you have to go get your computer added to the system

I find it rediculour, same problem as you. Cant use any on there wireless internet without it getting added. They also block sites that shouldnt be blocked and they dont block sites that they should.

I hate how the schools internet is.

I haven't been using my High School's Internet quite a lot, so I don't know anything about that. I have used my middle school's way more, and I believe it's more or less a hit and miss. Sure, you have to log in their Wireless Network, but I think their filter works half of the time. o_o; I remember people watching YouTube videos or something. At least they (the school's networks) don't monitor the actual activity done on the laptop, or else my StepMania (or Flash Flash Revolution) playing might have been troublesome.

ya that thing has spread like wild fire around the school enough that they made it so that even using if from your flash drive the school computers would block the execution of the .exe until it was renamed to something like bob

My school sucks for internet...
Almost every decent site, like chaos project, is blocked for absolutely no reason, which includes porn sites obviously, except they forgot the Japanese porn sites

lol well now I have my seclude changes I have my hour (last class) free and my first has English so now I'm posting from my free 5th hour and through the fluke of seclude change I've only gone to 3 classes to day

I have had same problems...
1st day: Half day so the teacher decides to not let us work on our project so i brought my laptop for nothing

2nd day: My laptop cannot connect to school internet, 1 person says if I get the certant login page I get, im screwd, another person says I have to GIVE my laptop to the school librarian and let here screw over my laptop... tomarrow, im taking my dad's verizon internet card

I'm quirky like that. I'm a great writer but i can't sell worth crap, I'm great at math but I can't memorize my multiplication tables or do arithmetic very fast.
just get over it. if there's something i need to have good spelling I'll do the extra effort to sell check be considering you knew what the word was supposed to be I don't see much of a problem

So I went on the Internet in my high school today. Turns out they definitely do have WebSense installed there, and it definitely does the same as my good ol' thing back in Middle School. It seemed pretty obvious anyway considering it's the same school district. I may have to try UltraSurf soon.

My local school uses a combination of a state-managed proxy and OpenDNS.

Surprisingly, only the major sites are blocked (of course, it also has a "weighted word limit" that blocks stuff with too many occurences of "Sex," "Cocaine," etc in it to "protect" us). Chaos Project/etc come through fine.

Though it didn't really effect me, since I can tether my laptop to my phone over BlueTooth and noone will be the wiser XP

On a related note: How many of your schools ban cell phones on campus? I can understand why they wouldn't allow it, but modern cell phones have tons of crap like e-mail/address books/Wikipedia that could far outweigh the negatives of allowing them.

The use of mobiles during breaks and lunches are perfectly fine. Within class though they're obviously rule-breaking and they get confiscated.

...On the issue of a filter blocking sites on those devices, I don't know.

^^I didn't realize I had to <_<;; every site I've been on they just gave you one once they decided you had been there long enough for the mods/admins to know your personality.

at my school the rule is that o=you have to have your cellphone off when you enter the classroom and if the teachers see your cellphone or hear it go of they can take it and send it down to the main office for you pick it up at the end of the day

Oh, I forgot to post my experience. At IAHS, my local high school, if they find out you have a phone they take it up for either a) One month or b) until you pay them $25.
