Lore

All right, I voted.
Some pretty nice maps, although there were mistakes I spotted in every single one, but again, I'm not supposed to judge this round, so I won't say anything :P
Good job guys, very impressive.
Facebook is like your fridge. You know nothing is in there, but you check every 5 minutes anyways.

Aqua

Okay... people aren't voting the full 3 votes... -___-

Please do so D:

legacyblade

I'm guessing contestants aren't allowed to vote :P

element

Mine's badass xD
I hate deserts.. When I think of deserts I think of flat sand with almoast nothing on the map.
If I look thru the other maps ...  Everybody has mountains and stuff  :^_^':
I hope there will be another contest soon when this one's finished.
So I can get to my kind of mapping :p

Aqua

legacyblade

But nothing on the map is visually boring :P And I lived in a very mountainous desert, so when I think desert I think lots of rocks everywhere.

- edit

so the contestants can vote? Isn't that a little...ya know.

Subsonic_Noise

I voted, too. I'll just say, I liked all maps, but screen tones and fogs really can make a huge difference. :P

Landith

Anyone can vote, I couldn't make it were contestants can't vote so yeah... I just hope they use their judgement and not just vote on their maps. If they think that their maps are good then they can vote on them (:

GAX

Before I even think about who I'm voting for:

Is anyone who is in the contest voting for themselves?

I'm asking this because if I do decide to vote, I will not vote for myself merely because I don't find it to be all that honest of a competition if we can vote for ourselves...

Rule 2: ShowHide
Quote from: Rule No.2Keep your signatures at reasonable size. The pictures in your signature may altogether be no more than 200kB and take up an area of 1600px2. That means 2 pictures of 400x200 are fine, one picture of 800x200 is fine and so on. Also your pictures height must not exceed 200 pixels, width can be as big as you want as long as your pictures match the other criteria. Every signature not matching this criteria is a subject of the moderator team to remove and leave this rule as message in your signature.

I voted, do I get a pin?

I'd be interested to know what mistakes you spotted in my map Lore.

Aqua

Ugggh...
I'm critiquing them all the same way I'm gonna do it for the final round to show everyone how I'm voting...
But it's taking forever @.@

Would people mind if I just posted the full critiques of the first 3 and just give the points for the other without full critiques?

Below is how I'm doing them.
QuoteI'm gonna be judging (and voting) on these maps the same way I'll do it for the final round.
I'm gonna explain how I do it.

Theme: Name of Theme
Definition:
What the theme is as I view it.

Overall Comments:
Just what I have to say about this round in general.

[Contestant]

Design      ?/12
Does it follow the theme?  Does your setting look like it was built by nature or by man?  Does the structure make sense?
Creativity   ?/12
How well is your idea for the theme?  Did you use the tileset in an innovative way?

Appeal      ?/12
How appealing to the eyes is your map?  Is there anything that causes discomfort?  What are you trying to say with your map?

Originality   ?/8
Does your map stand out from the rest?  Is there something that you used that gets my attention?

Aqua Points   ?/6
My personal opinion on whether I like a map.  Anything is fair game here.  This is also the hardest place to earn points.

Total      ?/50
   Just add the above.

Please trust that I am impartial to the contestants.

All right, I'll tell you, since you asked.

Logical Mistakes: (Mistakes that contradict reality or just are plain awkward)
Rock on flowers - I don't believe flowery plants like that grow through rocks. Maybe if it was a type of weed. I know you wanted to give a certain perspective, but not with this plant, it looks very awkward.

Signpost - Unless the person who put this up was lazy, I wouldn't put it in the middle of the road where people would walk. In reality, sign posts are usually to the side, you don't see the street signs in the middle of the road when you drive.

Footprints - This may be a bit brutal, but in the top left of the map, you have a set of footprints in the sand. That's fine except for one area. If you start at the very right of the footprints, the third one is where the mistake is. From the second to third footprint it looks like the person hopped sideways. I don't walk diagonally in real life, so this looks pretty strange. But again, it's not your fault, the RTP footprints suck.

Random Water - I don't get why there is a single tile of random water. Unless that fairy magically dug it for some reason, or it holds storyline significance, it is extremely odd. On top of that, two out of four of the rocks on the entire map are neatly placed on the top and bottom.

Perspective Mistakes (Mistakes that can be debatable based on a person's personal tastes and views)

Symmetrical Rocks - The two large stones "guarding" the little sand ramp are perfectly symmetrical. In my experience, I have never seen nature symmetrical (Although I haven't lived many years on this planet). It looks kind of weird in my eyes, not just the fact that they are symmetrical, but also because there are only 4 rocks in the map so these are kind of out of place.

Terrain Tile Choice - Ok, I'm going to be picky here and this may not be a valid point. The higher region of the map has random splotches of grass tile, while the entire lower area of the desert doesn't. Secondly, the entire desert is just sand, except for the little oasis with darker sand. If you intended this to be "wet sand", that's fine by me except you should have also put this darker sand by the little one-cell water tile also. I think it would have looked better overall if you added some darker sand in some areas and possibly a bit more rocks.

Explanations if you care to read them:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Rock on flowers:  The flowers are behind the rock, on the back side.  Growing in the protected area between the rock and the water.
Signpost:  If there are three paths converging, they usually have a triangular interchange with the sign in the middle
Footprints:  Honestly, it's a desert, theres lots of small bugs, and sand doesn't provide the best footing.
Random Water:  Wait, you've never heard of waterholes?  They are just small little puddles of water that are quite random in their appearance in dry places.
Symmetrical Rocks:  Screw realism, if you want to let the player know that a place is important, you use symmetry and geometry.
Terrain Tile Choice:  The high area is protected by plants and rocks, so winds wouldn't blow sand to cover the grass.  At the bottom though, wind would cause the sand to cover almost all small vegetation.  The dark sand is not wet, it is merely composed of different material, being closer to water and large vegetation.  It also serves nicely to bring out the top edge of the raised platform.  Again, no reason for it to be in other places, because of the wind.

The only real error is the bottom tile of the cave entrance and the tile to the left of it, which don't line up.  And by the way, don't use the word mistake for things you have to interpret.

Ryex

interesting, I surprised at the quality of some of these maps :D and at the same time dissatisfied with some of the obvious errors  :(
I no longer keep up with posts in the forum very well. legacyblade

I'd enjoy critiques, if anyone feels like doing any for my map >.> You know, just throwing that out there.

G_G

Can I have criticism on my map even though I'm disqualified? I really want to improve on mapping.

Ryex

Well G_G I like your map it's pretty good and no errors that I can see of the bat. the one thing I would do if it were my map is just add more. it feels just a little bit empty. also the piece of undulation at the bottom feels a bit wrong wile it is badly shaped for the spot it is in. that all i can think of to say.

This Side Backwards

G_G, is essence, it isn't necessarily a bad map, there are just a few things that don't quite fit... Palm trees growing in the middle of a desert (unless there's a nearby water source), windswept sand pointing in different directions and darker sand used in seemingly random places. Honestly, these things don't really bother me, but some people can get picky about the realism of maps.

Valdred

looks like it's between us two sourseb  8)

This Side Backwards

Heh, for this map anyways... I haven't used all of them yet...

If you have some issue about people breaking whatever honor system for voting (I think we're all awesome individuals here though, so I doubt that will happen), you can always just switch on over to people submitting their votes to you a la ballot box style. Of course, the PMs (Hur hur I said PMS) may pile up fast and the method takes a little longer, so it's really up to you.

p.s. I should vote now.

What's osu!? It's a rhythm game. Thought I should have a signature with a working rank. ;P It's now clickable!
Still Aqua's biggest fan (Or am I?).
