I'm gonna say 5. It's not too often you see more than three enemies in standard battles these days. I enjoy fighting numerous enemies so the battle isn't like...

Start >> Attack with 1, 2, or 3 attacks >> fight over...

I hate battles like that, and after you level up soo much, this becomes a common thing you'd see in RPG's. I was wondering what you guys thought about this?

Blizzard

I agree, 5 is a max, but only if there are many weak enemies. I realized that I prefer having only up to 3 in my game as my enemies are rather strong.

I voted 3 because 5 will get booring after a while imo.And you would have to make them much weaker that normal. I prefer having 3~ strong enemies before having 5..

I demand you to level up my pokemon. :<

Sally

i think it matters on the kind of battle... i think you guys are talking about the original battle system so, i have to pick 3 for a random battle.

Nortos

depends you can have 5 weaker battlers but they work well together healing ect and they are quite strong so yeah I pick 5 or even >.> 6 as a max

Punn

Average 4, 3 for common, 4 for normal, 5 for serious or event battle

legacyblade

I like lots of weak enemies...just personal preference.

The more weaker enemies there are, the more of a pain it can actually be. The quantity won't ever matter though once you have a spell or weapon that attacks every enemy, especially early within the game. Having that would easily cripple the enemies' tactics and they can die quickly. The ideal number for one would be eight (Hah! Eight), though it highly depends on the map you are in. Typically, I suppose it would be three.

Nortos

early on in most games proffessional and non enemies tend to range from 1-3 though

Blizzard

I rarely use 4, but yes, I use it only out of tactical reasons.

Well, except for some exceptional cases, I'd say 3. Exceptional cases like what, you ask? I'm too tired to explain, maybe some other time.

I think that by making your game good, with interesting main attacks, ppl will NOT be as easily bored while watching the battle scenes. My game uses the Sideview, with what "I" think are some interesting moves.

I'm liking 4 as the default, and 3 or 5 being the main variant...

...
Does your game have Cloud, Sephiroth, Goofy, and Mickey in it all at the same time? I don't think so. PWN.

I say it's 10 to the It's Over Nine Thousand-th power. Take that.

Battles with that many monsters aren't hard when you the big bang attack! But on a serious note I'd say maybe 5 tops. But depends on how BIG the monsters are though too  :-\

I say that the max is... IT'S OVER 9000!!!  8)
You just got that from me, huh? Or from Vegeta....

Battles with too much enemies will be a complete pain when you don't have a multi-attack move. It's especially true when these monsters have that and begin to gang up on a player (Especially if the monster has enough strength to actually hit him/her/IT). The same rules apply to a favorite Indie RPG of mine, Exile/Avernum. That game, you can have a battalion of enemies...yet, if you use one of the strongest spells, Shockwave, it can wipe them off in a minute, making the quantity obsolete. So having a multi-attack spell will make this all useless, but when fighting common enemies, three is enough to not make it a bothersome task.

I'd say it depends on the battle system involved. In say an ABS, 5 might be a bit much or way too little. In the DBS, 5 is a crapload lot if you are weak and they're decent. In an ATB, 5 enemies have the potential to eat your party alive. See what I mean?
