Well obviously nobody is going to be able to do that haha

But still. I think showing people what not to do, and then examples of what to do could be beneficial. It gives it structure if nothing else.

The permanent solution for your problem would be to stop hanging out with stupid people.

Shining Riku

Lol that'll be easy. It's easy to mess up some event systems so I know some mistakes that can be made first hand

AliveDrive

Since I'm not super good at RMXP I've had to learn through trial and error.

I've figured out some of the tricks.

After all, the point of this tut/game should be to pass on that very information.

Eventing is so easy to mess up baha...trying to figure out how to make it do what you want.

Shining Riku

Yeah I know, tell me about it XD

I made an event type system to mimic the skits that people can watch on both Tales of Symphonia games and a few of the newer Tales Of games.

So much fun :D

The wrong way for mapping'll be easy enough. Spriting too, as all you have to do is emphasise the importance of shading. Character development couldn't be easier, 'cos what's the worst mistake a writer can ever make?

Ah, excellent.  You liked my amusing sideshow, yes?  I'm just a simple fool, my wit entertains the wise, and my wisdom fools the fools.

Trust me. Spriting is far easier than good character developement :P I'm a writer and a spriter. Good writing is the hardest thing you guys are trying to teach :P (yes, I've been lurking. Now I shall dive back below the surface.)

The Niche

Legacy, I'm a writer as well. And aspiring spriter. What I'm saying is that there is one mistake and one mistake only in character development: lack of it.

No, you can develop them the wrong way, at the wrong time, or using the wrong plot devices :P Trust me, there's plenty of mistakes one can make on that subject. You can make more mistakes in characterization than in shading.

The Niche

Ok, point taken. But the point that lack of it is the worst mistake a writer could possibly make is not developing their characters.

That is true. I just felt I needed to clarify (most people on RMXP/VX forums think writing a good story is easy. That misconception really bugs me)

The Niche

You ever tried writing a novel?

I could post a few maps I've been working on.

They are open to critic because I know they're not perfect.

I'm an english major with a creative writing emphasis :P I've written many novels. My old ones all suck, but the one I'm doing now I'm sure will sell when I revise it :P

The Niche

Yeah, it's not easy. I'm trying to get published, but state exams are taking up a lot of my time.
RAt, go ahead.

So this is the entrance to a desert I'm making. It isn't done yet, but I like it so far.

Tell me what you think.

I think it's too boxy still though.

EDIT: Sorry posted the wrong link. Working now.

It looks very good, but can you post a zoomed n shot of those ridges in the center? Not at the event layer, please.

also, which ridges (N,S,E,W)?

the sad thing is I can't show all of the map :( it's too tall.

The northern ones are probably the most confusing.

The idea is to have a somewhat mazey/canyony feel to the map. There is also a moderate sandstorm blowing sand around.

I'm not that mean though, I usually put small treasure boxes at dead ends.

I hate nothing more to find that I walked to a dead end to find nothing.

Also, a reward helps to give it a more "exploratory" feel, if the player anticipates this and actively seeks out rewards.

Or at least, for me.

Anyhow...
