I was saying sorta what you're saying Subsonic. But dio, I do agree with you that sometimes items can be really cheap. That's why unless it's a random fun (at parties) match, we turn of the cheap items (the fan, that rocket launcher, and a few others). But most of us agree that being able to win regardless of the random items is a true test of skill.

Except, of course, in 1-vs.-1

When there's only two people, the items get really irritating. Sometimes, depending on which characters we're using, we put very low occurrences of smash balls on. But that's only if no one's sonic, fox/falco/wolf, wario, or Zero (a hacked version of Link who's final smash is a super mode similar to warios)

I used to think that items were unbalancing and NEVER played with them. But incorporating random factors into your strategy really strengthens your skill level. If there are at least 3 people, it makes it a much more enjoyable experience to me.

The thing i don't like is a few of those really evil stages (I'm looking at you spear pillar and big blue). Big blue is fun for a party match, but in serious play it is just evil. It was better in mele, since the characters were lighter and recovered faster. But in brawl that road is death. But if it's any sort of serious match, we always go to final destination or a custom stage that's pretty much a GIANT final destination.

I do see what your point is though, Dio.

Me and some friends actually just made a giant custom map exactly like that, LB. And thanks for considering my point. I do get the whole, 'items help determine your proficiency with dealing with random factors' business.

Agh, mass reply:

@Ulta: that's a perfectly fine way for you to play the game.  I'm not trying to change the way you play, but rather explaining the competitive way.  Just to make that clear.

@Dio: At the time I was replying to you, your argument was that playing smash (and video games in general) competitively was not legitimate, according to your oh so clear standards.  I was attempting to explain that competitive gaming was fun and legit, and not as hardcore as people think of it, and also that it's fine to play games your own way as well.

@LB: first, look up the tournament legal stages, there are quite a few good ones in brawl that are not FD but don't kill you for no apparent reason.  Second, items are a good random factor, but they drastically overpower all other attacks (which is why diddy is so good with his bananas).  This shifts the focus from landing combos to just stalling for time until you can get a good item in order to win.  We played items somewhat often just for kicks, and the winner is almost always the one who picks up the most items (checking the stats at the end).

@Subsonic: looking back over the posts, I realize that you put sonic as your top character, not as the top character.  Sorry for misreading that.

Summary: the whole point I've been trying to make is that even playing competitively is still playing "for fun."  Mastering the game further increases enjoyment, not the other way around.

Winkio, I totally understand what you mean about mastering the game for fun! That's what I do with smash. I'm not at all what could be called a hardcore gamer (though I was when i was younger). But me and my friends agree that when everyone is really good at super smash, it makes it more fun. (some of my friends when I lived at the dorms actually came over every day an hour before our smash gaming session to train. And they're not at all hard core). The more skill you have, the more epic the battles become.

And if that skill is built with items in there, then the items cease to be cheap. (it's like pikachu's spammable down-b. If you've played enough with someone who uses it a lot, it ceases to be cheap since you're good at dodging it and hitting them) So that's why items aren't cheap in my group. I generally win the match, but I usually tie items into my combos rather than use them in place of combos. (mapping out my combos on the blizzABS combo system would be a nightmare, since there are many conditional branches o.o)

And dio, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of such an awesome stage. I call it the tourney map. It plays Eye of the Tiger (thanks to hacks)

Gotta love hacks. I'd always thought that playing music from the SD card was bad for the card, though; did you directly modify the ISO? Maybe I just heard wrong.

legacyblade

No, the SD cards all work just fine. And it doesn't directly play from them. it'll just load the song from the SD instead of the disk. It's like opening a file off your SD card. Shouldn't hurt it. And if it does, SD cards are pretty cheap :P You can directly modify the game's ISO, but then you have to have a backup launcher. Eventually, once I get all the character moves, textures, custom stages, and songs, I'm going to burn them to a disk for ease of use, but until then the SD card works just fine.
