I checked and I know there already once was a topic about this, but that was in the time that SSBB (Super Smash Bros Brawl) wasn't realeased yet, so who's your favourite character?

Mine is Pitt!

Lethal-Yarn

Marth is my main : )

WhiteRose

Samus. I'm not amazing, but I'm not bad either.

Subsonic_Noise

I used to be epic with Ike and Lucario. Played online alot and all that stuff. I once beat three of my friends with Jigglypuff.
Then I played online against merona and she pwned me quite hard, which was why I then gave up being good at video games. :V:

Diokatsu

Honestly, I find Brawl to be vastly inferior to Melee and 64.

I like playing Sonic and Lucario as well as Marth.

winkio

Main reasons why Brawl is not as good as Melee:
tripping (XD), not hit-lag (which means no combos), multiple air dodges, longer lasting dodges, and last but not least, metaknight.  That said, the game is still very fun to play.

I am ridiculously good at smash bros games (all 3).  Blame it on playing against regionally ranked players all freshman year of college.  Anyways, in Brawl, Mario is my main (yay low tier!), Pit is my secondary, but I've taken to playing random, and still holding my own against the awesome people.

Pit is underrated currently, and will probably end up in the top 5 characters fairly soon.

Mario is an awesome character because he is so bad.  He has no priority, no speed, no grab, and no combos.  Because of that, I have to play with a different style (no, not camping).  It's very gimmicky, but it's awesome.  Think of it like loading your gun with bouncy balls instead of bullets: you aren't going to win by just firing at a guy who has real bullets, you have to be creative.

I guess I like gimmick characters.  That's why I played Zelda in Melee.  So I could just boot people all day.

Do you get beaten up regularily?
:V

winkio

No.  Because I can also do flips on both the trampoline and normal ground.

EDIT:  And I'm 6'1 and decently muscular.

Amazing. You're perfect in every way!

winkio

I'm commandeering this thread into all 3 games from this point onward.

Melee: I main Zelda, because she has so few useful moves.  There's the boot and the downsmash, and thats about it.  Downsides?  Horrible recovery, horrible shield, very light, and slow.  Still a good character, able to deal with all the high tiers.  There's also the fact that everything combos into the boot.  Weak boot to boot, up throw to boot, down throw to boot, up tilt to boot, boot to boot, get hit to boot, dodge to boot, respawn to boot, taunt to boot.  Yeah.

64: I haven't played in ages, but Kirby was awesome.  amazing priority and power.

Diokatsu

If you get get at 64 on an emulator, I'd be glad to play you online.

QuoteHonestly, I find Brawl to be vastly inferior to Melee and 64.

I liked the mechanics of Melee better (...excepting the air dash, I was not a fan of that particular exploit,) but feel like they brought in quite a few decent additions to the previous stage/character line-up. I pretty much agree with what Winkio said regarding the game mechanic changes.

Brawl: Snake and Marth are probably my two best characters, but I also play a mean Samus.

Melee: Marth and Samus.

64: Samus and Pikachu (the original Pikachu was broken as hell. Made a great teammate with Ness in competitive 2v2s.)

Edit: HOLY CRAP TYPO. I said I liked the mechanics of Brawl better. *shudder...*

I'm a big fan of Pikachu. I'm not a Pika-main, but I love him as a teammate. I use spikes too much to attempt Pikachu, so I use Ness, broken spike, and Kirby, awesome recovery.

Vell

In Brawl, I use Shiek/Zelda, Kirby, and Ike as my mains. I'm decent with Toon Link, I can play each of the Pokemon Trainer pokemon at a decent level, I'm playing around with ZSS, I'm not too great with Lucario, but I can play him. I figure it'd be too easy if I used Marth, so I avoid using him. Occasionally I'll play on Random. Also, I tend to use a bunch of the rest of the cast at varying levels of skill

Characters I CAN NOT use: Olimar. Game and Watch. ROB. A few others.

SBR*

Well, this is my list of top characters:

1v1
1. Pit
2. Toon Link/Marth
3. Toon Link/Marth (the other one)
4. Wario (oh yeah!)

2v2
1. Sonic
2. Lucario/Mr. Game&Watch
3. Lucario/Mr. Game&Watch (the other one)

BTW, I didn't know CP members were such big SSB fans :P.

About the 64 vs. Melee vs. Brawl thing:
Well, I never really played 64, but Melee was fun. Too bad Brawl doesn't have Great Bay :'(. Also, I used some glitches, like that slide thingy. I'm missing Dr. Mario... But Brawl has other pro's:
- You can use the WII controller (I use WII + Nunchuck, because I want to have an other play style than I had in melee.).
- Tons of other characters, like Pit, Toon Link (=/= Young Link), Lucario (=/= Mewtwo) and Wario.
- Final Destination is a lot cooler.
- Subspace Emissary (or something like that?). It isn't much of an addition (battling is way more fun), but it can be fun at times.
- ONLINE!
- New stages, like Bridge of Eldin (ah, good memories) and Delfino Plaza
- Some other sucky stages that nobody cares about

Maybe we can exchange friend codes so we can battle? I have to play it more, so I become good again... *goes to WII*

winkio

lol @

sonic being a good character
termina bay being a good stage
new final destination being better
bridge of eldin being a good stage

why?

sonic has no kill moves
termina was rapefest for whoever had the better grab range/speed
new final destination kills recoveries
DeDeDe

Also @ Ulta:  If you know how to C-stick, then you know how to play game and watch at a high level.

Ryex

Kerby and Marth in Melee and Brawl, Ike in Brawl, and Link in Melee

those are the one I'm good at. my stly of play is... strange. I rarely use the A button (I use it more frequently with Marth and Link though). and I'm in the air for about 60% of the fight. I also  almost never use shield or items (unless it is food, smashball or invincible hammer). I'm hardly a good player but I can hold My own with my friends who play both game rather frequently and I don't have console or go to their houses often.

People programmed these games.  Based on the analysis of this code, you can gather information.  Knowledge and experience are indeed correct.  For example, you can take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravitation.  Also, I stated no opinions.  I stated facts.

and here's the experience:
termina bay, I easily four stocked a player that is above my skill level by just picking a good grabbing character.
new final destination, you can get stuck under the overhang very easily with most characters.
Bridge of eldin, dedede can chain garb you to death and you can do nothing to stop it.
and sonic, who I play at a very high level, alas has no kill moves or priority.  He is just not a good character (doesn't mean he is unplayable, I've won against very good players with him).

I use a Wiimote and nunchuk. I got stuck with a really bad controller and had to learn the wiimote+nunchuk and now can't play without it. I also hated using the C-stick and hate people who DO use the c-stick as much as I hate edge-hoggers. Especially already winning edge-hoggers. Seriously, if you're beating me anyway, what's the goddamn point in killing me with such a cheap tactic? Play fairly, that's the only way it's fun.

winkio

Edge game is what SSBB is about.  It's what makes it unique.  And C sticking and edge hogging are not any cheaper than the cape, the snakedash, wavedashing, suiciding, chain throws, perfect shielding, etc.

Diokatsu

talking about Brawl competition as if anyone takes it seriously.
arguing that using certain tactics are cheap because you don't have the skill or the foresight to counter them.
taking video games in general as a serious measure of any skill whatsoever. Where I'm from, it's called "having no life".

And, btw, winkio, if you beat a player who is "more skilled" by predicting the playstyle necessary to defeat him, isn't that more skillful? Isn't it a tactical skill to judge terrain and the opponent when choosing your method of battle? Not to say that these "skills" are properly names. More like, acquired habits that only have influence in a 2D world of fucking plumbers and dragons and talking foxes.

Anyways, why the fuck are people arguing about a children's video game? It's based on a bunch of cute and fun E rated games made by a company that can't release a game that doesn't look like it was made by Disney anymore. If we're going to argue like this, I'll just have to inform you that I'm thoroughly better than all of you and I'd love to prove it. Seriously, you're all very bad and I'm so much fucking better. End. Of. Fucking. Story. Ok?

winkio

1.  Video games can be taken just as seriously as sports.  It's not like you focus your entire life, you just focus on understanding the details more so that you can play at a higher level, because it's more fun.  Think of it this way: you can play soccer by having a kick around with friends, which is fun, but you can join a team, practice, and play and a league, and that is much more fun.  (No, I didn't join a smash team, and I don't play in a league)

2.  More skillful players lose to less skillful players sometimes.  That's just how it works (I've beaten the same player from time to time in normal play).  But especially when they are at a crippling disadvantage.

3.  Keep laughing at your own trolling.  Because nobody else does.  You can spout nonsense and not back it up, but nobody will listen.  They will just mark you off as a looney.

@Winkio: the thing is Wink, I don't play for competition. I play for fun. I also like to play with people on or above my level. But not people who take it seriously. I don't mind it when people use the c-stick. I don't like it, but I'm not going to freak out and scream at you about it. I don't care about the suicide moves: Kirbyciding and the like have a tendency to also kill the user, and most are pretty easily avoided. And I dunno about you, but I don't know many people who can consistently Perfect Shield. And so what? It's not like anyone NEEDS to - the shield recovers very fast and if your shield breaks you suck.

In short: I don't like people who edge hog because it takes the fun out of the game. You didn't best me, you didn't get a good hit in, hell, you didn't even get LUCKY. You acted on an opportunity to make a giant ass out of yourself. Yeah, it's not illegal and it's perfectly fine for you to do it. Just you're not going to get respect for it.

I don't mind losing. I'm not a competitive person. What I do mind is when I lose because of idiotic stupidity like 'HURFDURFIMAPREVENTYOUFROMGETTINGBACKONSTAGEHURFDURFANDTHERESNOTHINGYOUCANDOABOUTITDERP'

It's completely different from using Ike's Side-b to get back on stage. That's a good recovery, but a risky maneuver. The enemy can just jump into your path and take the hit, thus forcing you to fall to your doom. But that's different. It's not 'I'm going to sit comfortably in my invincibility frames as you try frantically to get back on stage!'

winkio

I can perfectly respect not wanting to play competitively.  But really, edgehogging is part of the game, stealing that edge before your opponent can get it, and there are things that are much worse, like planking: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IzXR3W-f2I&feature=related

Ryex

that is an incredibly cheep way to play the game. I don't care how possible or fair it is, using a tactic that put the other player at such a disadvantage is no way to play. the video you posted, the guy said his opponent called him a cowered, that hit the nail on the head. that IS a cowardly way to play

right, I dislike both planking and camping in general, but the fun of the game is finding a way to overcome it.

Well, I like sonic for 2v2, since he is really fast. Especcialy when fighting CPU's. But I don't play a character because he is so strong, but because I like to play with that character. Just like Great Bay. Maybe it sucks, but I don't care :P. And I've never had any trouble with Final Destination.

I don't like edge hogging, nor do I dislike it. I am really bad at it, but on the other side, in my days of melee, I loved to slide towards the edge :P. On the other side, I prefer playing the game 'fair', so no cheap tricks. So, I'm kinda confused about it. I guess I have to think about this more...

I disagree, but this is an opinion and as such yours isn't wrong. In mine, the fun of the game is having a tough match against a skilled opponent, and if I end up losing, well it was a good match. Which is why I hate cheap tactics. Edge hogging isn't a strategy or a tactic. It's abusing the system. Cowardly, like planking.

Funny thing was, I wasn't trolling. That was completely serious. The end? Yeah, that was a bit sarcastic, but it made jsut as much sense as winkio asserting a presumption over S_N's skill level. It was satirizing the general nonsense that these kinds of debates lead to. It wasn't trolling, you assfag, it was picking up on the irony of the situation in this thread and others like it where no legitimate proof is given, but people still try and make outrageous claims.

It's funny though, it seems you all picked up on my point even if you didn't say it outright, because the general trend, which was argumentative and egocentric, has now become more accepting gained an awareness that you may not be the only correct one.

I don't see why everyone think sonic sucks so bad :P Even with his smashball, if you use the right moves you can kill with him. I don't use him anymore, but I was good with him for awhile. But my favorite has to be Olimar.

Another thing that I notice with a lot of the more experienced smash gamers is that they decide certain things about the game just are for the noobs. While sonic's final smash (and arguably the landmasters) are horribly overpowered and for the noobs, very little in this game is. Like Ulta said, a truly skilled player can take the stage and other factors into account. I personally think that not using items are for 1 on 1 battles, or the snobs. Items add an extra dynamic to the combat system that takes skill to integrate properly into your strategies. Ya, noobs can lord with items, but true pros can lord over the noobs who are using said items. I personally prefer brawl to mele (now that I used homebrew to remove tripping), because it feels more fleshed out. The other was ALL about combos. This one is about different strategies, which makes it feel less like other fighting games.

Besides, if you get good you can do 0 to death combos with just about any character. I do it with olimar rather frequently, it just requires a lot of chasing after people and hitting them before they can get the chance to move again.

P.S. Final destination is annoyingly easy to recover in if you're olimar. Even if you get metor-smashed off the edge. You just immediately press up-B and if you have most of your pikmen you will grab the ledge.

P.P.S. Ulta, just because you can't counter the ledge hogging strategy doesn't make it cheap. It's a big part of this game.

P.P.P.S. My post sucks when it comes to organization. My brain is farting I think.

I think the point is that professions want to take any of the factors other than skill out of the picture. I mean, if you get a really great trophy right off the bat in a math, then you really can't counter it. Professionals only ever play professionals in serious games, so the entire point of "Ya, noobs can lord with items, but true pros can lord over the noobs who are using said items." doesn't really mater since no one besides professionals will play professionals in a game that isn't casual. It's a way to make the game less about luck and more about skill, like how some stages are banned because they take a lot of the opportunity for skill to show and replace that with time taken to deal with the stage trying to kill you.

Items can't be factored into any strategy since they're entirely random and the chance to get an item changes based on placement and the game's own item manipulation. You can't predict them, so they're not fair.

Vell

I usually don't play with items. It's not cause I think items are for cheap noobs. I just find it more fun without them. That said, occasionally my group will decide to be random and throw items in for kicks. There are only a few of the stages we really hate, but unless it's a moving map we'll play it through.

Well, the thing here is, at least for me, that a good player's tactic shouldn't be static but rather dynamic, adapting to the given, sometimes random circumstances, such as items.
I believe that if something is in the game, it belongs to the game and a good player should be able to deal with it. If you can't play with items, you're not a good player.

That being said, it's not like I really care. I play video games for fun. The best games I had where against some of my best friends, using all items, and stage selection set to random. Yes, none of them was really skilled, and I won every single game, but we still had a whole lot of fun and laughed all the time. I don't know about you, but I do think that is what video games should be about.

legacyblade

I was saying sorta what you're saying Subsonic. But dio, I do agree with you that sometimes items can be really cheap. That's why unless it's a random fun (at parties) match, we turn of the cheap items (the fan, that rocket launcher, and a few others). But most of us agree that being able to win regardless of the random items is a true test of skill.

Except, of course, in 1-vs.-1

When there's only two people, the items get really irritating. Sometimes, depending on which characters we're using, we put very low occurrences of smash balls on. But that's only if no one's sonic, fox/falco/wolf, wario, or Zero (a hacked version of Link who's final smash is a super mode similar to warios)

I used to think that items were unbalancing and NEVER played with them. But incorporating random factors into your strategy really strengthens your skill level. If there are at least 3 people, it makes it a much more enjoyable experience to me.

The thing i don't like is a few of those really evil stages (I'm looking at you spear pillar and big blue). Big blue is fun for a party match, but in serious play it is just evil. It was better in mele, since the characters were lighter and recovered faster. But in brawl that road is death. But if it's any sort of serious match, we always go to final destination or a custom stage that's pretty much a GIANT final destination.

I do see what your point is though, Dio.

Me and some friends actually just made a giant custom map exactly like that, LB. And thanks for considering my point. I do get the whole, 'items help determine your proficiency with dealing with random factors' business.

Agh, mass reply:

@Ulta: that's a perfectly fine way for you to play the game.  I'm not trying to change the way you play, but rather explaining the competitive way.  Just to make that clear.

@Dio: At the time I was replying to you, your argument was that playing smash (and video games in general) competitively was not legitimate, according to your oh so clear standards.  I was attempting to explain that competitive gaming was fun and legit, and not as hardcore as people think of it, and also that it's fine to play games your own way as well.

@LB: first, look up the tournament legal stages, there are quite a few good ones in brawl that are not FD but don't kill you for no apparent reason.  Second, items are a good random factor, but they drastically overpower all other attacks (which is why diddy is so good with his bananas).  This shifts the focus from landing combos to just stalling for time until you can get a good item in order to win.  We played items somewhat often just for kicks, and the winner is almost always the one who picks up the most items (checking the stats at the end).

@Subsonic: looking back over the posts, I realize that you put sonic as your top character, not as the top character.  Sorry for misreading that.

Summary: the whole point I've been trying to make is that even playing competitively is still playing "for fun."  Mastering the game further increases enjoyment, not the other way around.

Winkio, I totally understand what you mean about mastering the game for fun! That's what I do with smash. I'm not at all what could be called a hardcore gamer (though I was when i was younger). But me and my friends agree that when everyone is really good at super smash, it makes it more fun. (some of my friends when I lived at the dorms actually came over every day an hour before our smash gaming session to train. And they're not at all hard core). The more skill you have, the more epic the battles become.

And if that skill is built with items in there, then the items cease to be cheap. (it's like pikachu's spammable down-b. If you've played enough with someone who uses it a lot, it ceases to be cheap since you're good at dodging it and hitting them) So that's why items aren't cheap in my group. I generally win the match, but I usually tie items into my combos rather than use them in place of combos. (mapping out my combos on the blizzABS combo system would be a nightmare, since there are many conditional branches o.o)

And dio, I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of such an awesome stage. I call it the tourney map. It plays Eye of the Tiger (thanks to hacks)

Gotta love hacks. I'd always thought that playing music from the SD card was bad for the card, though; did you directly modify the ISO? Maybe I just heard wrong.

legacyblade

No, the SD cards all work just fine. And it doesn't directly play from them. it'll just load the song from the SD instead of the disk. It's like opening a file off your SD card. Shouldn't hurt it. And if it does, SD cards are pretty cheap :P You can directly modify the game's ISO, but then you have to have a backup launcher. Eventually, once I get all the character moves, textures, custom stages, and songs, I'm going to burn them to a disk for ease of use, but until then the SD card works just fine.
