The following part of this post is fictional; I wanted to be creative when presenting this idea due to boredom.
So I was playing this game. It was pretty standard fair, the PVP system seemed directly lifted from WoW or something, except I saw this one dude. His NPC AI had him walking around in different places of the world, and he was saying the same thing in all of them. Something about a civilian badge or something - I don't know. All I know was that he had a quest, but when I checked his quest reward he only gave you that one item - a civilian badge. And it didn't seem to do anything, yeah? But funny thing, I kept playing the game, and I was feelin' pretty chill when I got to level 40.
See, level 40 is this big huge thing in this game. It's like when you pass your soldier-training nonsense or something and become a fully fledged officer. I don't know - I wasn't paying too much attention to the story. I was playing my game because playing the game is what I bought it for, yeah? So, see, this whole time there was this big 'PVP' flag that I could set on or off whenever I felt like it. But then I got this thing called a 'Soldier's Medallion' or whatever - it didn't take up an inventory slot, and it basically forced my PVP flag on. My immediate response was to think 'not cool. So not cool.'
But then one of my friends pointed out that guy I was telling you all about before. When I got to the guy, his mission was basically go across the world and spend some time in an enemy village. See, apparently there's this town or something, and there are no NPC guards. I passed through one of those on my side of the place, and I remember seeing some lowbie enemies and saying 'dude, that's so trash.' And a few times I saw a higher-level guy's corpse there. I always laughed at those corpses because who would be dumb enough to bring a level forty to the enemy's zone? So trash, I thought.
And then I got ganked the moment I set foot in that enemy town. Not cool, yo. Not cool. I couldn't complete the quest without talking to like all of the NPC villagers in there and convincing them I was one of their neighbors or something. So I was all dead and raging, right? So then comes along this level 5 newb who goes about talking to the NPCs - and you know what? That dick-wad level 60 guy was standing there, trying to convince the level 5 to enter PVP mode. And I got the point of that quest.
So then I re-rolled a new character, because I'd always wanted to try out another one of the characters, yeah? And like the first thing I did was I accepted that dude's quest and made a beeline for that enemy village. I got one of my main's friends to make sure I didn't get my lowbie ass torched by one of the random mook mobs as I made my way over, and I was all 'hey pointless NPCs. I'm your new neighbor. 'Sup.' And then it was all 'Boom. Quest Complete.' So not trash. I was like bouncing all over the place.
And then I get back to this quest guy. And he's all chill and the game even breaks character to tell me that completing the quest right then will prevent me from entering PVP mode until I grab the Soldier's Medallion at level 40. So I was all 'yo dude, thanks, I almost made a mistake there.' and then I got to level 40 again, and I grabbed that Civilian's Badge. And you know what? Now I don't have to deal with that insufferable forced PVP. When I'm questing and levelling and I see some level 60 asswipe comin' my way and I'm flagged I just say 'haha sucka, I'm not flagged anymore' and do my little turn on the catwalk. On the catwalk, yeah, yeah on the catwalk, yeah. I shake my little tush on the catwalk.
