Valhira is an entire world spilled with hundreds and hundreds of stories. The one involving the game is thousands of years in from the start of the history and a long while back from what we have written.

Valhira was once a land of magic. Magic was basic at first but people started to become aware of its powers and slowly learnt how to control it. A dark guild formed realising the power magic had in the world. They began killing and robbing people using magic. This caused a sudden reaction from king Grevil. He banned all magic from the lands. Anyone caught doing magic in any form would be beheaded. After 37 years, mages from all over the nation gathered together and attacked the castle in the mid of night. The war (now called the war of magic) lasted 11 years. It ended when magic was legalised, not by Grevil. But by his son, for the king had died. After 5 years King Blammon realised he needed to black list certain spells, he deemed unsafe. Some mages feared all magic would be banned. This caused a stir and in the middle of one full moon, hundreds of mages left heading north to colonise their own city. King Blammon believed they were using illegal spells so began sending up rogues to kill many of the mages. When many of the kings rogues had stopped returning, he himself headed up north to either declare war or call for a truce. But fully surrounded by royal guards, he mysteriously died in his carriage on the way. No sign of any wounds could be found. This sparked the fuses of war. Varrol, Blammon's son was crowned and instantly recruits the dwarves and names his alliance the Brotherhood, before declaring war against his opponents he called 'the dark mages', and calling all elves with them, dark elves. The dark mages recruited the Slinders and in retaliation renamed their dark mages to the Coterie and named all the kings elves the light elves.
This leaves you to decide.

You are about to be involved in the Broken War. Who will you be? Brotherhood or Coterie?

Features:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Unique PVP style - Players can turn their PVP on and off whenever they like. If you decide to attack someone of the other alliance while your PVP is off, it'll switch on and you can't turn it off for 5 minutes from the last attack. When you hit level 40+ your PVP will switch on and you can no longer turn it off.

Story - You can follow the story behind the game the entire way through, or you can ignore it and quest around, it's up to you.

Maps - There are over 250 maps. This game is obviously huge. This means we don't force you to walk everywhere because this would become painful. Big explore until your heart's content. Discover secret areas, unlock special caves, sail across the ocean, fly a griffin, ride in a carriage, teleport or battle in the PVP zone.

Drunk - Yes, players can actually get drunk producing some funny side effects.

Design - You can design your character when you first login

3 hours free - You can test this game with 3 hours free! After this you'll be kindly asked to purchase the game, this helps us improve the game and keep the server up and running.

Instance - Players can get involved in instances of all different sizes

Guilds - A lovely feature allowing players to create their own guilds

Chat - Chat allows players to talk to other players in the game. We do have a swear blocker implemented ingame. This stops swearing, racist remarks , foolish attempts at spaming web addresses. This clever devise scans your works so no "!/this words meant to be blocked/asd.s"

Quests - There are loads of them and more are getting added after release

Mix potions - Players can conjure up their very own potions, careful though! Mix it incorrectly and you might end up ill.

Markets - There are markets. They sell items and weapons at a cheap cost. But they might be stolen or might not work correctly. Purchase at your own risk! Caught with any stolen goods and you'll end up jailed.

Inns - Nicely spread around in villages. They may cure all problems but the cost can be a little steep. We recommend potions!

Fishing - Fishing in different area's will give the chance for different fish. Some rare, some tiny and not even worth a penny!

Herbalism - Wonder around and collect the flowers, wild herbs and mushrooms. You'll be surprised what you might be able to mix up!

Grow your own - Once you've got a herb you'll be able to grow your own, you'll have to pay rent on the plot however.

Travelling - Mage or Paladin? Why not teleport around? If you're on the Brotherhoods side, in order to teleport, you'll need to have been there before and completed the 'Teleport Licence' quests. If your not a Mage or Paladin, fear not. There are other solutions, griffins, carriages and boats are another option.

Your own home? - This is a feature we hope to have upon release. If not it'll definitely be released very soon after.

Secrets - There are many secrets in the world, secret chests, potion mixes, weapons and more! But shhh, they are secret!

This is to be read by people looking for a true story about hope, inspiration and imagination.

This is about the actually journey, that Valhira placed on two people's lives. Be it destiny. Or a strange fate that sealed us by its leaking of infectious beauty.
Valhira was first thought up in the early part of 2007. I was actually reading the Harry Potter series at the time along with The Magicians Guild (I really recommend reading it if you haven't already). After completing the books I sat in silence before a thought hit me. Where has the world gone? The Harry Potter world is metaphorically created when you read one of these books. But does it merely fade away on the last drips of ink on the last pages? This might sound like a crazy idea but. I was actually annoyed at this idea. Why would an Author spend all that time creating a world knowing it's going to vanish?

That's when I had the idea. I love writing, creating. I am at heart, an artist. So I set about making my own world. I sat and for an entire year wrote about all the things I wanted in this world, the different creatures and habbits, jokes, folk stories, laws and kings that would bespoke this world. After an entire year I realised I wanted more than a book. I actually wanted a way for people to be able to see, hear, experience the world. And this lead me to the game idea. After 2 months I'd got a team of 6 people together and we began working on a 2D point and click. Rather rapidly I realised. This game wasn't going to entail everything I wanted in it. So I stopped production and began thinking. My artist however was dying to help create the world, allow it to become real. She understood my passion and with it, brought her own. We began another year journey of getting all the history and stories, rumours, kings, wars, creates and everything in writing. After that entire year I set out trying to make an MMORPG. I realised. In order for this to work. It had to have a grand community. It couldn't be single player. What made this world so great was the way it would allow others to get involved.

I then made, the greatest mistake in my life. I decided to hire someone to help make the game. I foolishly used one of them 'hire a freelance' websites and attempted to get a designer and coder long side. I was promised a pipe dream of a 3D world and server and such for £500. I was amazed and handed the money over. Then I got asked for a further £500 to pay for the rest of production. I asked for printscreens and then all of a sudden the guys became invisible. They vanished without a word. This left me in a state for just over two months. I knew I'd just been scammed, I'd lost my dreams and hopes. And with this I almost gave up.

Luckily however I discovered rpg maker xp. I'd played a few made games and one inspired me beyond anything ever had. It was beautifully mapped, the sound was custom. EVERYTHING was interactive, you could press a piano and it would play, you could press on a draw and it would open and have random pieces of paper in with some funny jokes or notes on. You could quest into a cave and kill a thief and save a nun who would tell you a tale of darkness. I fell so in love with this game I realised the potential rpg maker xp had. It then took me a while to get to grips with the engine then because almost an expert in events. I then started searching for an online system.

After months I found NetPlay. At the time it seemed like the Holy Grail. I found a coder, musician and sprite artist. Everything appeared to be working great. Until the coder vanished. I was left with a system still with bugs and a game half baked. So again. The game fell almost to dust. Until the Angel of the north that is Blizz appeared. He kindly offered me the option to use his online system.
He helped me set up and I literally felt new hope, as if, with Blizz helping every step he was lifting me from the darkness of which I had been plunged into.

I then managed to pull together some of the people from the first attempt, I then began working again with the new system. And now. Finally, after everything. My dream is about to become a reality.

This MMORPG is soon to release. It's not exactly how we imagined it (budgeting effects creativity apparently). But the basics of the world of still enrolled in this game. The story, the world has been mapped to the sketch of an A1 map drawn up by me and my artist. We hope everyone will enjoy it and get involved. Every penny we get will be spent on making the world more towards making Valhira look and feel more like it was intended.

Not only are we working on the game but there are 2 podcasts that are going to begin on release of the game. A comic is soon to be released on release of the game. And books are follow later in the year!

Thank you sooo much for reading this and I'd appreciate any comments, every positive comment keeps us going!

And Blizz. Thank you.

Will be following very shortly :)

*edit*

One's uploaded, more coming!

What we've actually done is edit the Rpg maker xp screen size. The game stays normal size. However the menu and chat are on their own 'extended' screen. So the quality never drops but the chat doesn't make the screen tiny.

:D  Good story.  Getting into hobby game creation (not that it's not serious, it's just not on the same scale as professional teams of 30 people or more) is a more daunting task than most realize, but it's good you found your way through it :)

So true. People look at games like Runescape and because it's not the best quality (looks wise) people believe they can make an MMORPG with ease. We'll I'll be the first to stop them in there tracks and point out. If you want to make a decent MMORPG with hundreds-thousands of players. You can't do it in the afternoon with a premade package like so many try.

Thanks for the comment by the way :)

Literally so much work. It's free to download, it is a purchase game however, it's not much. It's just to keep the server running, updates and payment for the staff we can't possibly run it for free. This may turn a few people away but when people realise how much has been put into this, we hope they'll give it a try.

I'm afraid I don't think I'll be handing out unencrypted files upon release. A while down the line I will. If people want to learn to use the online scripts, they can easily get access to RMX-OS.

When it comes to game servers, isn't it better to have your own. Then that fee is gone. It is not too hard to setup a RMX-OS server home.

Also, will it be like Halo with one Single Player with a story and one Multi Player or will it be like Runescape with the story online?

Blizzard

That's option #1.
The story will evolve as the game evolves in realtime. The players will be what will create the world.

It would limit how many people could connect to it, slow my broadband down and it would have them unprofessional 'offline' status randomly if not constantly. If I run it through a paid service they guarantee uptime, bandwidth and backups. Less problems in the long run. Also stops hackers from 'breaking out' and hijacking my network.

Yea, the game will evolve in real time.

Single Player game will slowly come out but these are not fully planned as the MMO is the most important thing at the moment.

CrackLine

Looks very interesting!

Besides, there are tons of unencrypted games out there.

It's good for 2 reasons:

1) The background story states you are at war. In war you can't choose not to fight. It's war. However we understood players wouldn't want to have PVP on constantly because of gankers (high levels killing low levels).

2) Almost the reverse of that is we didn't want people to leave their pvp off for ever. If your in war you should be fighting. It would be no good to see the other alliance, both be good levels and find he/she has their PVP off. This would lead to you running to the otherside to find only players higher level flicking on their PVP. Pointless.

The great thing about this system is you'll be experianced enough, you should be in a guild by then, you'll have friends that can help you if thnigs get sticky, other players of 40+ around you will be likely to help you out if they see a battle going on because they could get attacked and it's better to work in teams.

The games being stalled until December. This is because our coders are working on some amazing systems but can't code them fast enough. But don't worry. While we're waiting for the codes we're pumping in more and more contant and quality! Just over to valhira.com and check out the forums for daily updates.

People can very well not fight in a war.  It happens all the time.
Do you really think that people who don't want to be ganked leveling are going to feel any happier about being forced to deal with people attacking them during their questing at high levels?

So you're taking away player choice so that the people who like PvP can bother the people who can't?

Did you know that an overwhelming majority of MMO players don't join guilds?  Or play with other players at all?  And yours is a small upstart MMO that doesn't even have a meaningful subscription base at all yet.  You can't assume anything about your player base, and taking away choices just further marginalizes your market.

People who don't want to PvP, DON'T WANT TO PVP.
People who want to PvP, WANT TO PVP.

Make it a choice, and satisfy everyone, instead of just one side of the market.

I agree with Namkcor. You could make different servers with different rules though.

Ryex

I'm going to have to agree with the others on this one, lv40= permanent pvp is a really bad idea. per had on a server dedicated to pvp but you still need a server where people don't have to pvp if they don't want to.

Sure, constant PvP is annoying, but were talking level forty here. Also, the way the world is set up, you won't get gang killed unless on enemy borders, or in enemy territory. Basically, it's pretty easy to avoid PvP. Think WoW, it's that basic set up.
And also,

Where did you get that information? I did some research into it, but could't find anything. But nevertheless this game is made for community, as opposed to individualism. It's not supposed to be an individual player game, with some interaction, it's meant to be a multiplayer game, with some division. Obviously it has not been released yet, so these things cannot be tested. However, if it isn't a good solution then players will complain and the game will change.

It's true, I saw stats for Runescape, Guild Wars, and WoW, and pvp was under 50% for all of them.  Wow was the highest with around 40%, guild wars was around 8%, and runescape around 2%.  This was the percentage of time that the average player spent engaging in pvp battles while in the game.  I got the stats from a link in some Guild Wars forum two years ago.

Draco6slayer

Well, I guess my point is this: We've never seen this type of game before. As far as we know this could be awesome, or it could totally suck. By having a closed mind about these things, we really prevent all forms of gaming evolution. Perhaps even with PvP, players will still ignore there opponents. Perhaps there will be so much PvP that it will demonstrate real war. Perhaps there will be too much PvP. Anyway it goes, we can't know until it does.

As far as being able to not fight in a war, were talking medieval ages here. If somebody goes to your house and attacks you, youw ill fight back. So in that case, you are fighting in war, whether you like it or not. But this is unimprtant, the imprtant thing is to see how it goes before you complaing about it.

winkio

Wait, we've never seen an MMO before?  This must be the most revolutionary concept ever where you were from.  Did you come here in a time machine from 1990?

Also, your justifications hold no logic.  If you want to demonstrate real war, wipe a player's account when they die.  Then see who plays your game.

You quote WoW as your basis, yet WoW can pull off having PVP servers because it's so commercialized and is able to run literally hundreds of servers. And of those, there are Normal servers, RP servers, and PVP servers. And in that case, there are areas even in PVP servers where you don't have to be flagged for PVP.

You're not simulating actual war, you're just using a dated system. It already was tried out, I mean it's not like it takes a brilliant mind to say 'lolololol you can always die.'

And didn't Diablo have something where you cna play on a hard mode and when you die your character is locked?

In WoW, there are PvE servers where you always have to flag or nobody can attack you.  WoW gives you the option to PvP or not PvP.
Your suggestion doesn't.
Being max level is irrelevant, people don't just start wanting to pvp at max level if they aren't interested in it to begin with.

Yes we have.
WoW has PvP servers where you can be attacked at any level anywhere (except Sanctuaries, few and far between), this is comparable to your level 40 experience.  Unless you like PvP, it's not fun.

Alright, that's like 90 complaints all at once, lolz. I'll try to answer them. Working from top to bottom.

QuoteWait, we've never seen an MMO before?  This must be the most revolutionary concept ever where you were from.  Did you come here in a time machine from 1990?

I meant an MMO of this nature. I have never seen a game with this type of PvP system, that may be because it's a bad system, and may be because people reject it. I want to find out which before I complain about how it is. There are a few games you can be attacked whenever anybody wants, but the basis behind this is that fighting somebody who fights back strategically is more difficult than fighting a defenseless NPC. And no, you'll never find my time machine. I didn't come here from 1990,persay. I'm not a time traveler.

QuoteAlso, your justifications hold no logic.  If you want to demonstrate real war, wipe a player's account when they die.  Then see who plays your game.

So by no logic, you mean limited logic, correct? I know a few games that almost demonstrate this, but this is not realistic war. You will have X players who go in to war, X-Y players die, remaining players shrivel up and ignore eachother. Real war has constant incoming troops, with people coming of age, people who were already strong entering war, and etc. this is demonstrated by allowing current players to go on. Not precisely realistic, I'll admit, but damn close. You make a good point though, perfect realism is unfun. Also, that part of the post was in response to the earlier quote by NAMKOR,
QuotePeople can very well not fight in a war.  It happens all the time.

QuoteQFT HAH!

Unfortunately I don't know what QFT stands for, so I guess I can't combat that argument/compliment/easy money making guide/cheese. No sarcasm intended, I honestly don't know what it means...

QuoteYou quote WoW as your basis, yet WoW can pull off having PVP servers because it's so commercialized and is able to run literally hundreds of servers. And of those, there are Normal servers, RP servers, and PVP servers. And in that case, there are areas even in PVP servers where you don't have to be flagged for PVP.

I don't understand how having multiple servers with lots of players applies. More player=More death, not less. And from what I understand(Correct me if I'm wrong, but) it costs like 50 bucks to change servers. Also, as far as the PvP safe zones, I think that is virtually created in this game by the fact that each side will avoid hanging out in the enemy side's main cities, because that would be stupid, you would die.

QuoteYou're not simulating actual war, you're just using a dated system. It already was tried out, I mean it's not like it takes a brilliant mind to say 'lolololol you can always die.'

Since when is realism dated...? and I'm getting tired of the sarcasm at this point. There better not be too much more...

QuoteAnd didn't Diablo have something where you cna play on a hard mode and when you die your character is locked?

I'm not sure, I don't own diablo. But I don't think this is an argument point, so I'll move on.

QuoteIn WoW, there are PvE servers where you always have to flag or nobody can attack you.  WoW gives you the option to PvP or not PvP.
Your suggestion doesn't.
Being max level is irrelevant, people don't just start wanting to pvp at max level if they aren't interested in it to begin with.

Again, avoid the borders, avoid PvP. It's practically the same system, only a little more limiting. I never said anything about max level...

QuoteBlizzard themselves has said that they feel too few players join guilds.  That's why they're implementing guild progression and levels an bonuses in Cataclysm, because they want people to guild up.

So if a big company like Blizzard has a bright idea to encourage getting into guilds, why can't a little game that does the same by making being in guilds a way to live easier?

QuoteI'm not the only one saying this.

Not sure what you mean, but you also have never played the game, and neither has anyone else who's saying that the game should change. I'm also not saying that the game should change prior to testing.

QuoteYes we have.
WoW has PvP servers where you can be attacked at any level anywhere (except Sanctuaries, few and far between), this is comparable to your level 40 experience.  Unless you like PvP, it's not fun.

Dang it! We have not seen this game before. That's all I mean! You can't cut off a feature without testing the freaking thing!
Again, let me say this. If you have never played the game, you can't criticize it. It's like watching previews and then reviewing the movie.

EDIT: I probably sounded really angry in this post, and I'm going to apologize up front for that, but more importantly I'd like to say why I sounded so angry, and you probably have the same concern. I'm arguing the same point, over and over again against other people who are arguing the opposite point again and again. And we know what this means... were talking about a basic level flame war. And basic level flame wars can grow, oh so easily. So I propose we accept our differences on this PvP topic, and move on to discussing other features. I, for one, am not interested in continuing the argument and trashing up this post with annoyances. No, I'm not trying to get the final word, I'm trying to maintain all of our sanity. After all, this is a proffesional class forum. It's no place for mindless blather. However, I may feel compelled to argue if anyone argues with me(as you probably already want to) so... we'll see how this goes. Thanks.

You are implying that a 100% predefined concept cannot be critized. Forcing PVP to be active for players over level 40 is a very well defined concept. It's not like previewing a whole movie, it's like seeing 30 seconds of a scene and saying "I think that one chick in there was hot". It can be an irrelevant fact of the movie or it can be the reason why there will be 20% more males watching the movie.
PVP is a feature. It's been tested in many, many games. Even forcing PVP isn't original an idea. The only that is original (probably not even that one) is that the forced PVP occurs after level 40. (Personally, I think the idea is not a good one and will scare players away that don't want to PVP rather than attract any additional kind of players. People that want PVP will start with level 1 and not wait until 40. Everybody who gets 40 will just get frustrated and stop playing because all the childish no-life players that have already level 300 love to kill them.)

That's because you are so absorbed with the idea that you are right regardless of the arguments and you can't stand somebody not sharing your opinion as you see your opinion as a fact rather than an way to look at things. You see it as an absolute truth rather than a point of view or perspective. And now you are pissed that you are losing a fight and try to back off for damage control. That's fine. You can only make things worse so stopping is the best option here. But with a stubborn attitude like that you won't get far in life, dude.

I know this might come as a shock to you, but there are game developers on this site that are not working on this specific game.  You are in fact one of them.

Draco6slayer

I'm going to give you one last warning. If you don't believe that I'm an expert on these things, just google "Draco6slayer". And let me tell you, they are all me. I've been everywhere, I know how internet mobs work. If any of you know what the mob mindset is, that is how flame wars work. In any flame war you start with somebody making a point. Somebody else agrees, and it goes on until somebody makes an opposing point. The "Mob" at this point has built up just enough momentum to argue. The first party argues back, and then the flaming starts. Both arguments are repeated again and again and again. Both groups grow more and more sarcastic, and develop more and more violent language. (This is where I noticed we had a problem, and it is the last possible chance I had to stop it.) After that enough Mob Mind Momentum is built up that everything is ignored to make a point. Now you may think that this hasn't happened yet, but look at this:

Blizzard: Your orginal statement was simple and made a nonargued point. It was that most developers don't release unencrypted versions, and that others can be found elsewhere. Now look at your more recent posts:
QuoteQFT means Quoted For Truth. It would have taken you less time to write down those two sentences than to type it in Google as it took me more time to write this down right now. I only seconded winkio's statement because I concur.

You're getting angry at me for asking a question that took you 20 seconds to answer, and then you plow straight through my apology for getting worked up. Then you go on to insult my personality and tell me I won't get anywhere in life. This is after I pointed out that we had a flame war approaching. You did make a good point in the middle, and that's a good sign that this topic hasn't dies yet.

Winkio: You started out by point out actual data, which is great. But more recently:
QuoteOh great, another game developer that is too stubborn to accept criticism.  This is giving me bad deja vu of cw7.

QuoteI know this might come as a shock to you, but there are game developers on this site that are not working on this specific game.  You are in fact one of them.

Firstly you attack my personality, like Blizzard, and secondly you compare me to somebody who apparently you didn't like. I haven't seen you act like this anywhere else in the forum. Then in your next quote, you get strangely angry when I don't understand your meaning. Whenever this has happened elsewhere on the forum, people are OK with mistakes. Also you have switched to using facts that you don't know are true, and in fact are not. The biggest game I have ever made was 5 maps. If that counts as game developing in your mind, than sure, I'm a developer. But still I'm not being stubborn about my game, so it doesn't apply.

Draco6slayer: I started out by making the point that we should have an open mind to these things, and shouldn't just reject them. My most recent arguing post included words like "Hell" and "Damn" and said this:
QuoteSince when is realism dated...? and I'm getting tired of the sarcasm at this point. There better not be too much more...

Even now, as I try to keep my cool, I onl seconds ago argued Winkio's point:
QuoteThe biggest game I have ever made was 5 maps. If that counts as game developing in your mind, than sure, I'm a developer. But still I'm not being stubborn about my game, so it doesn't apply.

Believe me I'm not criticizing you, I'm warning you. I've seen all of this before, and it looks as if I'll see it again. If you choose to press on, please do so in another thread. I at least don't want this thread to go down with this argument.

wait... your not working on this game? then why are you defending it like this. not that is is a bad thing it just seems strange to me.

On topic:

to all the developers on this game, what I'm asking (and what I think most every one else who has made this point) is that you consider VERY carefully the impact forced PVP would have on your player base which is inevitable going to be small any way, one thing it definitely will NOT do is attract more players than it will turns away.

here is a good rule for any developer who is getting feed back from a group of people. if your getting feedback from your audience the the ratio of positive to negative feedback on any one feature will scale from a small group to a very large one with the exactly same ratio.
ie. if 50% of the people in a group of say 100 think a feature needs some revision then if you tried to get the same feedback from 10,000 people that 50% would still hold (with some variation, a small group can predict a large group perfectly, but the vast majority of the time it will be close)
my point, unless your getting positive feedback in equal proportion on this Idea defiantly think about revising it, also feed back coming from other people who are working on the project doesn't count the same as feed back form people observing the project
I no longer keep up with posts in the forum very well. Glad were back on topic  :^_^':. The reason I was defending it was because I believe people were too quick to reject it. I'm pretty sure none of us have tested this system, and thusly we can't rightfully argue that it definitely won't work. My opinion, though, and I don't believe people are in favor of it. I kept up my argument, and that went bad, so I did the best I could to prevent it from being worse. But I'm very glad were not doing the whole anger thing anymore. It's not the kind of thing that fits Geek PvP discussion, lol. Thanks :) .

Oh, and also back on topic. Your post made sense, staff should look into such a situation, but you had a slight inaccuracy. Silent Majority is a term that describes the fact that the group that is currently being supported will not voice there opinions unless the opposing group takes power(The fact that it was first used by Nixon descreases it's credibility, but still). Obviously that rule does not apply at a major level here, but it has some implementations. Also keep in mind that this is not the only site he is broadcasting on. If you really want staff attention, though, you should check out the Valhira Forums, which you can access from the site. It has a whole thread dedicated to complaints.

Anger? Where exactly can you tell that I am angry. I was merely pointing out your lack of effort. I even ended my post with the word "dude" to comfort you and make it clear that I am not being angry (even though I was being very harsh). But I have given up the belief that anyone can change so I'm not really putting effort into this. It's not the fact that people can't change, the problem is that they don't want to.

If somebody is literally obsessed with their own beliefs or opinions, they will do whatever it takes to protect them because they are so insecure that those are the only things they can cling on. Even if it means that they have to resort to moving away from the original topic to a completely irrelevant one (such as being the victim because of having been cornered in a debate) rather than being a man and stopping the nonsense. Furthermore, rather than understanding that they actually are digging themselves further and further in and making themselves only look more and more of a jackass, they decide they will take every single statement related to the topic and make it about them. They take it personal because it's a losing fight so they can pity themselves afterwards. It's really fascinating.
Trust me, I know what I am talking about. Been there, done that.

Quote from: Draco6slayer on September 03, 2010, 06:19:10 pm

I am not sure you understand the concept of apology. Apology means that you are sorry and that's that. An apology without the intention of apologizing has no meaning and an apology is not followed by the word "but". Saying "I'm sorry, but you suck anyway" or "I'm sorry, but you did the same thing" or "I'm sorry, but you started it" is not apologizing.

Quote from: Draco6slayer on September 03, 2010, 06:19:10 pm

Please open up a dictionary and look up the terms "insult" and "constructive criticism". Insulting is simply telling somebody something bad about them while constructive criticism is pointing out mistakes and giving either suggestions to fix them or explaining the weigh of their actions and a possible impact on the future if the mistakes keep being repeated. Of course, I am not being 100% accurate of those words. This is my own short interpretation. That's why I suggested you look them up so that you don't confuse those two terms in the future.

I'll be blunt here so you understand what you are doing before you misinterpret my constructive criticism and the psychoanalysis I gave you about yourself (which you obviously do not like) again. Stating that a flame war is approaching does not take the responsibility off you causing it.

I am sure winkio can defend himself, but before he does (if he even bothers to reply because I wouldn't if I wasn't the admin and responsible for order), I'd like to add that his liking or not liking of a member does not have anything to do with anything. cw7 was repeatedly behaving inappropriately and for that he was banned permanently. You reminding him of cw7 means that you are behaving inappropriately.

If you wish to be banned, please say so and save us all the hassle of a forum drama. I will gladly oblige. It wouldn't be the first time a member asked to be banned for a certain amount of time.

EDIT: I see you posted in the meanwhile. I hope you mean it and don't continue this nonsense. Because next time I might be in a bad mood and instead of bothering to reply, you will be banned (maybe not even by me).

I can very easily write something off after seeing it and disliking it.
That's how the world works.

It's one feature, and I feel that it's a very bad choice.
And I -have- tested it before, I play WoW on a PvP server.  I'm attacked all the time, whether I want to be or not.
It gets extremely annoying.

Delusian

woooow.

Ok a lot of arguing so i thought it would be nice time for me to jump in at the deep end.

I've read most of the posts.

Please read this in a calming voice as I'm not trying to be provocative in any way shape or form.

When pvp only games were first invented, I could imagine people's reactions being negative. Then players adapted to play it. Then it created a new breed of players.

I thought this would be a nice experiment because it would just be a different style. For example a FPS player switching to final fantasy couldn't critics that they thought the game was too slow and the movie sequences were too long. This is because they are used to a different set of rules and when they change it's an unfamiliar ground.

I think however this would be a nice test at the very least. Players that don't want to be involved in PVP I believe won't have any trouble avoiding it. The game is set in three huge halves. The top half is Coterie, the middle is PVP zone and the bottom is Brotherhood. It takes literally hours to get from one side to the other. You can easily walk away from it, get a carriage away and such.

The idea was that it would create a tighter community. The higher levels would have earned a type of respect because they are literally the guardians of your alliance. If a raid does come in while you're around, they would be the people helping. Higher levels would be more encouraged to join guilds or make friends than other MMO's.

I heard a mention at 'when i'm level 40 and my PVP is turned on and someone at level 300 comes to gank me...'. The max level is 60. That leaves only 20 level differences. The levels do create a difference but it would create motivation to level, motivation to join a guild or play with your friends because as a team, your stronger and less worries would be around.

I understand that people are having an issue with the switch from choosing to pick PVP or not and then having that choice taken away. I think at level 40 it shouldn't be a problem with level difference, it should create a tighter community and it'll be a nice new server style.

Again, I'm not being stubborn or ranting. I merely believe this would be a nice attempt of a new style instead of being stuck by the rules of the big MMO's. I'd love to hear your opinions be it negative or positive but please make it constructive criticism. It is merely a concept and because of this topic I thought about a quest of 'honour'. Which would lead you into a tournament. Upon completion you could gain the choice to choose PVP or not again.

All Ideas are welcome.

As I already said, people have preferences and people are unwilling to change. If you leave forced PVP, you are limiting the target audience which directly translates into less people playing your game. There are people who will be put off by that fact immediately and won't even try the game. There are people who are willing to try and once they get to level 40, they will stop because they don't want to PVP. There is a small number of people that will embrace the idea. Of those few people one part will try it out, not like it and stop playing. One part will try it out, like it and continue playing. And the last part will force themselves to continue playing even though they don't like it until their frustration increases to an unbearable level that they will stop playing. The problem is not that they will eventually stop playing but that they are the kind of people that spreads information and posts reviews. Trust me, you will encounter a lot of negative response for the level 40 PVP that will overshadow any positive responses and make you regret the day you made that decision because now your game has the reputation of being frustrating which will put off even the players that might have or would enjoyed the PVP. In the end you will be stuck at your reputation and only few people will keep joining the game.
You have to understand that people don't want new and original ideas. Everything that is new and original makes them feel unoriginal and scares them (there's a shitload of psychology involved in there). They want what's already been done a hundred times. They just want it presented differently.

But it's your call. If you don't want to consider the strategic marketing values of your decisions, you don't have to. If I were you, I would consult with a PR agent. What you want or like is not necessarily the same the players want or like. After all you are making a game that others will play, you are not making the game for yourself or only a small inner circle of friends. I've learned that the hard way.

Lol Blizz, just 2 minutes ago that post was only 4 lines :P

Though, you're right. I'd stop directly after I reach lvl 40.
Maybe you have to add something else at the end of the pvp. To not make it etertnal PvP after reaching lvl 40 but the choise of small level of PvP for like 5 levels and then get something else to do in the army. Not only being a soldier.

Ah, Idk. Make ur game how u want it 2 be.

Yea I've heard this expression used a lot. It's just I've studied Marxism and such and struggle to allow myself to reproducing the same crap. At the moment I believe the industry is like a dog vomiting and eating its own sick. Just going in circles. I really want to break the chain, create something new and innovative.

I understand the issue many people are having is the fear of PVP.

I'd just like to answer to a few fears.

I don't want to PVP:

That's 100% ok, no need to worry. You can turn you PVP on and off until level 40. When you hit that it will turn on pertinently. However PVP can be avoided

I don't want to be ganked:

That's why we made sure we had the 40+ lock. You don't have PVP turned on permanently until you a good level. The max level is 60. So you can't be one hit killed. You'll have a fighting chance. With training area's specifically made for level 40-60 you won't struggle to level up. It takes well over an hour to get from one side of the world to the other. When they die, they are sent back. It's extremely unlikely they'll be able to keep getting you.

Option:

I'm considering the option of allowing players to complete a quest to gain the option to turn it off. Completion of the quest will gain you the option to turn your PVP off but lose you 'Alliance Points'

@Element. Thats a nice idea, maybe players could level up in army ranks. In doing so they reach different levels of 'PVP STAGING'. Example:

Level 40-45 is rank one
Level 46-50 is rank two
Level 51-55 is rank three
Level 56-60 is rank four.

Players can only battle those in their rank unless they turn on 'Unlimited Pain Boundaries' option. This would gain them more 'Alliance Points'

Same over here. But unless you become a multi-million-dollar corporation that produces and publishes games, you won't succeed at that. You mustn't be overambitious.

You know, the main problem about forced PVP is that fact alone for itself. It doesn't matter if they can avoid PVP. If they have been enjoying the game with no PVP and suddenly it all changes, it's annoying. It's not the same game anymore. Those people don't care about avoiding PVP, they don't want it at all under any circumstance.

Also, I think you are putting a little bit too much meaning into PVP. It's just PVP. People don't like it if it's complicated and you'll only end up scaring away the people who actually want to PVP because it becomes too complicated. The thing with the quest to turn it off is like forcing the player to do something. And that's no fun.

When you hit level 40 perhaps a button could appear saying 'Keep' or 'PVP'. When you hover over Keep it explains you can have the option to turn PVP on or off.
PVP keeps PVP on.

PvP is important because of the background story. This isn't just a game as I explained before. This is just a part of a HUGE story.

Blizzard

Ok, this is a great idea. I would even completely remove that from the list of features. If you have a choice, there's not much point mentioning it.

You have a point. The option wouldn't make sense.

So I think i'll leave it as players can do the quest to get the option back but they will lose 'Alliance Points'. This way if players feel that strongly they have an option.

Ryex

interesting. as i said you don't have to completely get rid of it in order to not scare players off, just revise it enough that your not scarring them.
another option is that once they reach level 40 they start earning some form of reward that accumulates as they stay in pvp and they can turn pvp off but they have to spend a portion of the reward, it would be a good idea to make it so the reward can also be used for other things too.

Well I liked Elements idea (I Customised it slightly to work) but I'm hoping this type of system would work:

I also like the Idea of having 2 playing styles when getting to lvl 40.
Though, don't make it so that u can only choose once if u change to pvp style or non-pvp style.

I like the idea of ranks. Maybe, make it so peaple can earn the ranks on seperate ways. One by doing PvP(fighting in the army), one by retrieving information of the opposite factions(scouts), one by doing something else... Idk
Just Think of the idea of being in war. The army doesn't only need warriors, also scouts, spy's and other people ya know.

Still just a idea :P

It should be a free player choice whether or not they want to PvP.
Forcing them to PvP, or penalizing them for not wanting to PvP is oppressive.

True but this kind of statement doesn't really help. I'm looking for constructive criticism rather than just criticism.

I like this idea. So the choice could be instead of PVP just switching on, you choose what to do. The choice could be between Intelligence collector, Warrior, Scout or Spy.

Yea I meant that it didn't really show an alternative rather than just not putting it in. The system is going in the game but I'd like opinions as to make it friendlier.

As you said, players don't want just the option to turn it off. The mare fact it's there would scare them.
So I've been working out a better way of presenting the system.

You can't be ganked. Creates more realism. Because I love Elements idea and have decided to implement it (because it makes sense) then PVP isn't the necessarily the outcome. You choose how you wish to go forwards. Permanent PVP, the option and be a intelligence gatherer, scout and protector. These will then effect your storyline and quests. It'll make you more involved with the storyline and stop people fearing about the PVP.

Now that's sorted.

The only thing I see being good for level 40 pvp:

No pvp until level 40, then, when you are...
You can have the option, but still disable it. And then enable when you want.

Really, I do not want this forced on me, seeing as how I was actually going to pay for this game. :P

The following part of this post is fictional; I wanted to be creative when presenting this idea due to boredom.

So I was playing this game. It was pretty standard fair, the PVP system seemed directly lifted from WoW or something, except I saw this one dude. His NPC AI had him walking around in different places of the world, and he was saying the same thing in all of them. Something about a civilian badge or something - I don't know. All I know was that he had a quest, but when I checked his quest reward he only gave you that one item - a civilian badge. And it didn't seem to do anything, yeah? But funny thing, I kept playing the game, and I was feelin' pretty chill when I got to level 40.

See, level 40 is this big huge thing in this game. It's like when you pass your soldier-training nonsense or something and become a fully fledged officer. I don't know - I wasn't paying too much attention to the story. I was playing my game because playing the game is what I bought it for, yeah? So, see, this whole time there was this big 'PVP' flag that I could set on or off whenever I felt like it. But then I got this thing called a 'Soldier's Medallion' or whatever - it didn't take up an inventory slot, and it basically forced my PVP flag on. My immediate response was to think 'not cool. So not cool.'

But then one of my friends pointed out that guy I was telling you all about before. When I got to the guy, his mission was basically go across the world and spend some time in an enemy village. See, apparently there's this town or something, and there are no NPC guards. I passed through one of those on my side of the place, and I remember seeing some lowbie enemies and saying 'dude, that's so trash.' And a few times I saw a higher-level guy's corpse there. I always laughed at those corpses because who would be dumb enough to bring a level forty to the enemy's zone? So trash, I thought.

And then I got ganked the moment I set foot in that enemy town. Not cool, yo. Not cool. I couldn't complete the quest without talking to like all of the NPC villagers in there and convincing them I was one of their neighbors or something. So I was all dead and raging, right? So then comes along this level 5 newb who goes about talking to the NPCs - and you know what? That dick-wad level 60 guy was standing there, trying to convince the level 5 to enter PVP mode. And I got the point of that quest.

So then I re-rolled a new character, because I'd always wanted to try out another one of the characters, yeah? And like the first thing I did was I accepted that dude's quest and made a beeline for that enemy village. I got one of my main's friends to make sure I didn't get my lowbie ass torched by one of the random mook mobs as I made my way over, and I was all 'hey pointless NPCs. I'm your new neighbor. 'Sup.' And then it was all 'Boom. Quest Complete.' So not trash. I was like bouncing all over the place.

And then I get back to this quest guy. And he's all chill and the game even breaks character to tell me that completing the quest right then will prevent me from entering PVP mode until I grab the Soldier's Medallion at level 40. So I was all 'yo dude, thanks, I almost made a mistake there.' and then I got to level 40 again, and I grabbed that Civilian's Badge. And you know what? Now I don't have to deal with that insufferable forced PVP. When I'm questing and levelling and I see some level 60 asswipe comin' my way and I'm flagged I just say 'haha sucka, I'm not flagged anymore' and do my little turn on the catwalk. On the catwalk, yeah, yeah on the catwalk, yeah. I shake my little tush on the catwalk.

I listen to hardcore gaming stations and they talk about people making fake stories to try and prove a point.

Obviously my post previous wasn't read correctly.

Ganking cannot be done unless you want to turn your pvp on to ' Unlimited Pain Boundaries'. This wouldn't be the games fault. It would be the players fault. This can happen in other games with a pvp setting on and off. If a player decides to turn it on, that's their choice.

PVP cannot be switched on and off. It has a 10 second count down.

PVP is in many games, and yes it's true. We have a fictional war in our game, so do many other MMO's.  We thought it would be interesting to have the game in this section of the history rather than loads of references.

Think that covered that novel up lol

Vell

Obviously the point of my writing up there went COMPLETELY over your head. mmkay, I'm gone.

Ryex

the point of the writing was to suggest a system, notice that s/he only got ganked when s/he was in enemy territory? ya you might was to reread it again.
