So this an interesting place my brother introduced me to.  Some of you may find this more interesting/helpful than others, but regardless, there are some things here that everyone should see.  That said, I don't agree with a lot of things on the site, but that doesn't mean it isn't good.

High Existence

Some interesting articles to get you started:

The Power of Choice
Alternate Sleep Cycles

ForeverZer0

Interesting site.
I see what you mean, I disagree with the a lot on the website, mainly the "why" of many of the stuff, not so much the actual context.

I personally think that happiness is that elusive of a target to find. I went through some bad times in my life, but over the past 2-3 years I have had some real epiphanies. The problem is so many things in society (kinda like this website) try to give you 1,000 tips on how to be happy, when in reality there is only one simple truth that you need to know: You are in control of your emotions.

Simple statement, and its easier to say than to do, obviously, but your happiness is your choice, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR SITUATION. And yes, I mean that without exception, that is an absolute. I used to let external things like people's opinions, the amount of money I had, my looks, and everything else to influence my overall self. The sooner you learn to be happy with yourself and what you have, and to fuck all the rest, the sooner you can start to live.

I'm confused as to whether you read the 'Choice' article and are agreeing with it, or haven't yet read it and are presenting your own ideas.  I'm getting the impression that you haven't read it yet, and if that is the case, you definitely should :)

ForeverZer0

I browsed through the site for a little bit and kinda got the main "theme" of it. I saw that some of it varied greatly, so my opinion of it could be a little off. I'll check it out a little more in-depth in the next few days.

It seemed to me it had a lot of stuff for improving your way of thinking, and how to view things differently, such as the post with the relaxing music, that if heard thinking of something of the Holocaust would seem to take on an entirely new theme.

I did find it very interesting, though. Good find.

no, the one with the music was about choice:

QuoteImagine that you are in a concentration camp and your Nazi captors are forcing you to listen to that song while you eat.

Wouldn't it be torturous? Not only because you are being forced to listen to it, but because of who is telling you to do so?

Notice that you are still listening to the same song; only the circumstances have changed. Depending on the context, that song can product feelings of relation or just the opposite.

Now consider that this process could also go the other way if you choose for it to do so. In that concentration camp, you could choose to make that song a source of solace. While the other captives squirm and try to cover their ears, you could decide to view it in a completely different way.

And then right after that is a statement very similar to the one you made in your earlier post:
QuoteYour experience with anything is wholly dependent on you -- nothing else. The early morning traffic could be a source of frustration, or a nice way to get some extra time for yourself in the morning. The trash truck loudly waking you up 30 minutes early could anger you for the loss of sleep, or provide you with an opportunity to get something extra done this morning.

The article about us not existing is plain idiotic. Not thinking very highly of this site so far.

ForeverZer0

I didn't finish it, though I figured that was where it was leading. That's kind of what got my mind on that, I guess.  :P

When it comes to that specific subject, I feel deeply opinionated about it.  I don't try to force it upon anyone who doesn't agree, but I absolutely hate the modern day opinion of society as a whole where nothing is anyone's fault because they weren't close with their father, or too close with their mother, or one other of a billion excuses. I believe that personal accountability is one of the most important values in the world, and sadly one that is going down the shitter. Criminals get off with light sentences because they were beat as a child, and there is a pill that will fix anything about yourself you don't like. Get the fuck real. People can get dealt a bad hand in life, but in they end they are 100% responsible for themselves.

That is kinda what I was getting at in the previous post with the whole "in control of your own emotions thing".  It is all what you make of it. If are sitting around feeling like shit and feeling sorry for yourself, I have this really genius solution: Think about something else! I don't think that its too difficult of a concept, and often wonder why most people as a whole can't seem to grasp it.

@winkio: I apologize for going SO far off tangent in your topic.

I think you misunderstood it.  It's not that you don't exist, it's that your concept of a 'self' with emotions, thoughts, ideas is not an entity that exists in reality.

Spaceman McConaughey

I am sorry, but I do not understand. I am an 'self', with emotions, thoughts, and ideas. That is all a part of me. So then I would not exist.

Either that article was written by an idiot, or I am really missing something here.

ForeverZer0

Basically it means that your sense of self, your thoughts, emotions do not exist in tangible reality, only in your head.
I could care less about where they may or may not "technically" exist. They are real enough to the individual, so what's the point in discussing it?

Yeah, now I see. Although, the site is still kind of meh for me.

Might browse through it more later to see if my opinion will change.

A. Duh.
B. I am not to be trusted I'm bipolar/ schizo. The article sounds like something I would say only to the degree of I feel like I'm a ghost walking amongst the living. People seem like mannequins to me with just plastic faces and bodies. No emotions, names, or lives. I see myself as the same... Yet, at the same time I feel the article stupid. You 'exist' because you 'exist'. It doesn't matter that your existence isn't as elegant as you think... seeing as all we are is a bunch of signals sent from our brain to our body, but you exist.. just as much as anything else in the universe exists. I would have to say if they said "You aren't as unique as you think" I would agree. Society is a house of mirrors basically. You walk around seeing yourself in other people and build relationships with the most flattering reflection. That is the true essence of a social species.

ForeverZer0

I would think it wiser to make friends that give you the most truthful reflection, not the most flattering one, unless you're totally conceited.

And that is usually not the case.

I found some time to go through a few of these. There are a couple of interesting thoughts there. Some are quite abstract, but I have found them to be very true for quite some time now. Others are simple and there are always those that are plain stupid. I would like to suggest that you read this one as well:

Lucid Dreaming

I practice Lucid dreaming whenever I can (1-2 times a month I'd say), but I never really made any effort to learn how to do it consistently. The funny thing is that I am on automatic when I dream lucid and so I often forget again that I am dreaming.

The point is that you are fully in control and that you are solely responsible for how you perceive everything around you.

There is an interesting book about a few of these things calls "The Power of the Present Moment". I've read some kind of short version or whatever ("Practical Application of The Power of the Present Moment" or something like that) and I have to say while the book has many pages, everything could have been explained on 10 pages max (instead of 140). There are some interesting thoughts in there, but that's that. There is almost no intuitive structure in there, it felt more like a bunch of ideas thrown together than a construct to understand and believe in.

I don't like arguments like that because in the end, if we think it through, we could argue that alot of things only exist in our heads. Sound as we know it is only our brains interpretation of periodically swinging molecules. If our hearing would just be a tiny bit more sensitive we could hear the regular movement of air molecules as some kind of noise.  Same goes for seeing, colours, smell, etc. It's all just how we percieve it, our brains reaction to certain triggers. So, going by that argument, it all doesn't exist.

I dream lucidly pretty much all the time. It just sort of happened to me.

actually, let me look something up, I had an interesting experience once with lucid dreaming...

EDIT: Here it is! C/P'd.

So last night I had this really whacked out dream. It was also kind of short. Here's a summary:

Me and a bunch of other kids were looking for these random objects, I think it was 'cause we felt like it. And using weird science shit we located one in a weird... thing on a government campus(I think it tied into a past dream of mine, actually) for something or other. So we went to retrieve it, but then the gov't people found us(not surprising, seeing as the thing was right where cars pulled in and in broad daylight) and we managed to convince them we were with them. So, it was me(who was an avatar of me: different person, but 'me' as in I was in this boy's body), these two boys, and like two girls, and a little girl. Okay, so we boys(originally typed this word as 'boyd') were taken to another part of the place from the girls. We wound up separated(I don't know how - weird dream thing).

So apparently the little girl can telecommunicate with her mind. So the plan to escape is 'blow shit up' basically. Well, it's at this point that I start lucid dreaming. Start having control of the place. BTW we were in a library type section. So, I was like, what better way to blow shit up than to use a freaking meteor? Not Temple's THE Meteor, it's more like the summon, not the prayer. So I imagine in my head that giant, slowly approaching meteor...

and then instead of that, it's this weird bouncy, swift, small exploding meteor ball thing. So I rewound the dream, and tried to superimpose the image of my meteor into it again. The small meteor bounced higher, but I got otherwise the same result. So I decided 'whatever, I'll roll with it' and continue the dream. So I steal this van thing(it was black) and drove off, and somehow the other five escaped on their own, probably through similar means.

So one of the girls decides she wants to sit up front(since we're using the van as the getaway vehicle) and I was like 'eh, sure' 'cause I didn't really care who sat where.

Well, apparently, the little girl did. All of a sudden the dream shifted into an alternate version where I somehow managed to jack a van, a motorcycle, and some dude's leather jacket and helmet and get them all to the same place in the same period of time. And then I tried to put it back, and instead I wound up with the little girl asking to ride with me and myself agreeing.

Guys. WHAT THE HELL.

@Sub: I actually look at it like a possibility. But even if it is true, it doesn't really make a difference to me. Even if nothing around me really existed, I am still here for whatever odd reason and I still "exist". So I try to make the best of it. There are always the things that are possible, the things that are simply irrelevant however you look at them and the things that are actually important. If you decide to take them into account, but disregard the first two and only concentrate on the last one, you will eventually find something that works for you in the last category. And after you do that, you will find something from the first category as well.
e.g. I look at love and all that stuff as just the means for reproduction. Our emotions and responses hardwired by our genes manipulate us and trick us into doing stuff in order to achieve that goal. But I don't care. It sounds like nasty stuff (especially when I use words like manipulation), but in the end, it's irrelevant. It's just something, it's not evil or good. It doesn't even matter what it is. Happiness may be influenced by this, but it doesn't matter as well, because there is something more important than happiness. And that's the peace of mind. When you accept things as they are, you will find peace. And if you are not in unrest, you will find happiness much easier as well.
