Looking at it from a scientific point of view, thoughts are mere electrical currents in our brains. When we perceive something with our eyes, it is also converted into electrical currents and thus the equivalent of thoughts in a physical sense. Yet the image you see is not alive and cannot be considered as something alive. So I think that you can't really consider imaginary characters alive. They may appear real to you (just as delusions might appear real to a person diagnosed with schizophrenia), but that doesn't make them alive.

Also, you said yourself that they are projections. A projection is not a living thing, it is only an image. Just the same when you watch TV. What you see on the TV is not alive. It may be a projection of something that is alive, but the projection itself is not.

poor heretic. i think we all understand where you're coming from, it's just not logically correct, haha.

though heretic did admit to speak from a metaphorical aspect, which in a way would have to exclude the reasoning of logic and science. to be a metaphorical in nature, is in essence to defy the real and the logical. for a projection, or any inanimate object for that matter to be seen as living must only be taken metaphorically. hell, part of me thinks that personifying something is a very abstract way of thinking. i also believe abstract to be a base for winkio's theory of combining your conscious and subconscious awareness.

ladies and gents, we are on a logic roller coaster and i'm not tall enough to ride...my brain is fried.
