The bottom code does indeed work, but for some odd reason that is unknown to me, $data_actors[1].armor1_id is not functioning as I'd expect it to.
It stays at 0. Here's the code. I also have not touched this project for a while.  :^_^':

You want to use $game_actors, not $data_actors.

$data_actors are the database values you assign the actors when making your game. armor1_id will return the starting equipment ID you gave your actor (which, from what I can assume, is nothing).
$game_actors updates the actor values dynamically as the game progresses; changing the actor's shield will also change armor1_id.
