i have asked this question at another forum but now i want to see what you guys think about this:

"i have been wondering if the default RPG Maker VX materials are good enough to make a commercial game?
would you buy a game made with RTP graphics?
if the game has a good story and gameplay, is that enough?"

winkio

The RTP is copyrighted by Enterbrain.

In other words, no.  If you make a commercial game, it better be 100% yours.

computerwizoo7

you can use the rtp, as long as you buy the program that is.

King Munkey

i played a game on the psp once that looked like it was made in xp. And i believe that the remakes to Final Fantasy 1 and 2 looked similar to vx.  but its been awhile since i played them so i dont know..

Are you absolutely positive about that??
I think you can too, but I think you still need like official proof that Enterbrain is giving you their permission...

Anyways, to answer your question...
I probably would, BUT the game has to be EXTREMELY well made.

VERY professional...

There are many homebrew games on the PSP using the RMXP graphics...which unfortunately they didn't comply with their terms of conditions with the RTP, which says that the graphics are only to be used for RPG Maker related purposes...or something like that.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using the contents according to the terms of conditions for the RTP, but this is VX you guys are talking about, so I am not sure.

So I did a little research...Here's the part about use-in-game only...
QuoteLicense
ENTERBRAIN grants to Licensee a non-exclusive, non-assignable, fee-free license to use the RTP SOFTWARE only for the purpose to play the GAME created and distributed by RPG MAKER VX users who shall complete the registration procedure.

But here's the issue about distribution and etc.:
QuoteLicensee shall not reverse engineer, de-compile, or disassemble the RTP SOFTWARE. Further, Licensee shall not sell, distribute, assign, lease, sublicense, encumber, or otherwise transfer the RTP SOFTWARE and/or its data without any prior written consent of ENTERBRAIN.

It's up to you, see what you get out of these words. I think myself it's okay though, but see.

On the other subject, I would never buy a game using RTP Graphics unless I see footage of the game in action. Then, if it's satisfactory enough, I might as well make a purchase. This is only from my mind, finances are out of the picture. It's way preferable to use your own custom resources, however.

that means that you should not rip open the software and edit it to your liking and then sell it as something else.

that would be cool if we could get the source code though.

Starrodkirby86

There's barely any source code for the RTP software except for the installation kit. There's honestly no need to reverse-engineer or alter it...

But the main point in the text was "Further, Licensee shall not sell, distribute, assign, lease, sublicense, encumber, or otherwise transfer the RTP SOFTWARE and/or its data without any prior written consent of ENTERBRAIN."

Of course it's not right to sell the RTP software, but if one were to include it with the commercial game package, would that mean you are distributing its data through a game and therefore breaking the license? I would assume not, but texts written on a paper is highly interpretable; look at the Constitution for Criminey's sake.

you won't include the rtp software!
you will export your data and encrypt it and sell it.

True enough. However, its not the software I'm including, it's the data. I'm sure the resources that the RTP software has counts enough as data, and that can interfere with Enterbrain's visions. Though, Aveyond has data of the original RTP, which from a screenshot I see the Cerebus/Hellhound character set, and since Enterbrain isn't barking at them, I see no reason they should bark at you unless you poke at their face. In fact, I don't even think they care...Customer service these days.

So if you want to use the default RTP, use it, no restrictions on you. :3

Oops. My bad. :P

I don't want to turn this into a debating thread about the legal use of the RTP...so I hope no further arguments come up here...

Umm...that's totally not how we work here at CP.
We don't start arguments. Intelligent Debates maybe (I stay clear because my brain is small) but we don't just fight because it makes you feel better...

computerwizoo7

for me, i move mountains with only words!
Mwhahahahahahahahahaha!
at one point i was normally anonymous on the forum but i guess these people are not too bad.

winkio

First of all, Final fantasy and its remakes were waaaaay before VX.

Now, to get on to my real point:  the RTP is like a starter kit.  In my opinion, it is the minimum.  And if you make a commercial game with the minimum... idk it's kind of like cheating.

I guess use it if you want to, but I would heavily advise against it, mostly because it is very unprofessional.

computerwizoo7

hmm, good point!
but when i say use the rtp graphics i am talking about the characters and map only.
also the rtp graphics alone can't make a good game.
there will be custom graphics as you all say, for the rest of the game and also a few generated sprites and so on.

Calintz

I would say...make your own custom characters and battle graphics for sure.

Blizzard

You can use the RTP in a commercial game, but you have to credit Enterbrain. I am not sure if you can include it in your game directly or if you have to require download and separate install. I think the latter. Best you write Enterbrain an e-mail and check out their site.

There already was a topic like this, you should try to dig it up.

I highly believe this one should be right. At least the thread here had way less argument than this particular one. #_#;
