What is your style of coding? (RGSS or any other language)

Like the topic says how do you code? when you start a new project do you start from scratch? or do you look for examples that are similar in concept and use them as a base?
personally I do both I build a frame from scratch and use other pieces of code as a base for parts of the system. but then I edit it so much that it is hard to tell where the old base code was.
When I do coding it's kind of a mix between a copypasta DJ and scratch code.
what about you?

remember I'm talking about ANY language you do coding in I use the same methods weather I working with RGSS, plain Ruby or Actionscript.

or Ruby, in which case I'm scripting and I do w/e.

I usually code from scratch in visual basic or c but with rgss I usually just make new scripts or ones that can enhance the rtp scripts.

well I was kind of going after a different answer but still nice answers.

what I really meant was this.

you have selected a task that needs to be accomplished in code and you know what k=code you going to do it in. what do you do next? do you sit down and think over that task and try  to find a way to tackle the task on your own? do you go in search of examples of how other people tackled taskes that are simaler on concept and base your approach of theirs? do you do both?
what do you do after you have you method of approach down? do you code the frame and them go fill it in? do you take a existing piece of code and build off of it? what?

that's what i was asking.

assuming it's an original scratch (not something like an add-on), depending on the complexity, I take a few seconds to an hour to plan out the classes and main implementation.  Once I have that, I code methods and properties as I go and as they fit. I try and get the basics finished first for debugging purposes, then work up the higher complexity parts.  It's not quite like filling in a frame though.  It's like setting a foundation, making sure it doesn't suck, then building a house.

I agree there. I do mostly start working right off the bat if I don't expect the project to grow much. If I expect it to be big, I plan it more detailed. In any case I always plan everything so it can be extended and reused. RMX-OS started as quite a small server script. As it grew I changed the implementation and split classes, etc. But there's a point where it's enough and one shouldn't mess with the "low level" stuff anymore since it can mess up everything else.

Well, I don't have a habit of planning. I first type out pseudo-code out of my head. Then I see if it's OK or needs a change in structure. I apply the changes and start coding properly. This is, of course, for smaller to medium sized projects (most of my RGSS scripts and the RM Launcher). For larger projects (like my incomplete menu system), I plan meticulously and take my time coding and testing.

As for copy-pasting, I used to do that in the beginning, but I told myself "if you want to learn, type stuff out yourself!". From that day, I've never copy-pasted the first set of similar code (for example, I type out the first "self.contents(" statement and I copy-paste that in most of the cases).

Also, at one point copy-pasting is more time-consuming than typing something out yourself. When I'm not sure what to do, I usually type out the code as I believe it will contribute to my typing "experience", even if by an infinitesimal amount :) EDIT: Of course, all of this happens in a split second in my mind. Don't think I'll waste 5 seconds to decide if I want to type foo-bar or copy-paste it!

Careful with that. Typing out the same sequence of letters over and over can easily cause a bug by mistyping it while copy-pasting will save you the hassle. Of course, if you copy-pasted an errorous line, you have to fix it where you copy-pasted it. But at that point you should consider making a method. xD

Of course, if not used carefully, it could seriously mess things up. Happened to me while I was coding RPG Advocate's equip scene... You know, thinking about it, there's still scope for serious improvement in that script. OK, now I'm going off-topic >.<
