Sony is an electronics company, not a government agency or whatever that can just do this. Every company has its time to go, and Sony's is now, in my honest opinion.

Reminds me of Activision. They threatened not to pay the guys who made Call of Duty 4 if they didn't make Call of Duty 5 back then. It was something about half a billion dollar or so. The developers were able to file a lawsuit and won the case.
All the big companies are starting to act like this. This is terrible. :/

the producers are staring to feel more entitled to their rights than the consumer. that despite the fact that the consumer bought their product it is still theirs. in the last 3 years intellectual property law and the enforcement of it have started to become big topics. fuck fair use, it's way to vague and doesn't give the protection it should. there needs to be a broader and uniformly enforced version of it. not this double stranded crap we have now.

If you don't like what a company does, don't wait for some authority to stop them from it. Just stop buying their products and tell other people about it. If enough people don't like it, the company will have to stop or it will lose money. That's how our economy /should/ work.

The last thing I am buying from Sony will be the NGP if they manage to not be counter-sued by the hundreds of thousands of people who watched the video and go bankrupt.

After I buy that, I will wait until it's hacked and never go back. Sony has really disappointed me with this bullshit. Guess I'll wait for my letter in the mail telling me my family's going to be sued.

I mean, I just watched the video. But I see this talk of Sony trying to get the personal information of people who have commented, and JUST watched it. I will also lose respect for Google if they actually comply with Sony's orders and fork over everyone's personal information.

I actually stopped buying sony and coca cola products at all... in case of coca cola, it's because of the crimes on human rights they are involved in especially in columbia, and I reccomend everyone to do the same.
If you don't want them to do whatever they want, don't give them your money to do so.

google has been a stand-up company in this area. they don;t do all the bullshit other companies do when it come to intellectual property. they aren't about to fork over that information without a court order to do so, and then they will likely try to fight it.

Google did some 10/10 interlectual property trolling, though. You know that google project with the digitalized books they have? Well.. they didn't exactly have the rights to scan alot of them, they just did it, got complains and lawsuits, but payed their way out of it and in that way didn't really leave the authors and publishers a (uncomplicated) way to say no. You're right. And if they are thrown a court order their way to do so, I have lost all faith in America and its legal system. It also makes no sense that this kind of stuff is allowed with mobile phones, and not game consoles.
Isn't all of this the same? Jailbreak/root my phone, so what. Jailbreak my PS3, sue me and tons upon tons of other people. It makes no sense.
And looking at George Hotz, I feel bad for him. If he had to go to prison, he definitely looks like the kind of guy that would break down almost immediately in there. It's sad.
If he manages to pay for this in cash, it would take him a very long time to recover from that. He may never recover at all.
I dunno, maybe some kind of community service, instead of ruining someone completely.

I guess the only thing I can really say is that I truly believe that Sony has some of the best products on the market regardless of current events, and I personally respect that. I pay real money for Sony products and I honestly wouldn't have it any other way, frankly because I have never in my life been disappointed with something I've bought from Sony. That's just me I guess...

I don't believe in ANY way that what Sony is doing as a company is wrong, but it is seriously a real shame that a kids love for video games and computers is possibly going to ruin his life. Video games are fun. I love me a good video game, and that love for video games shouldn't cause a fucking calamity within your life, Lol.

What they're doing is not wrong? Your views are really distorted. The video posted on YouTube was public, I did not break any goddamn law by watching it, and I certainly should not be SUED for it. Sony is acting like a moping bitch of a company right now, and they are taking it too far.

I find it odd that Sony is being viewed as some mean evil company over this, with many of you speaking about boycotting the company and what not. Sony's recurring problem with people hacking their products is becoming a costly issue to the company I am sure, which is directly proportional to the livelihood of those same people who work there. I admit that I have downloaded ROMS, and I make no excuse for it and say that I am somehow justified. I fully understand that I am stealing. Anyone who attempts to justify it and say otherwise is a fool. It doesn't matter if you are a beggar in the street and Sony is a mult-billion dollar a month company, stealing is stealing.

So how can so many be so angry about a company being pissed and wanting some type of compensation from those who steal from them? I know if someone stole from me, I'd be pissed. I would be even more pissed if I poured millions and millions of dollars into development of gaming consoles, which repeatedly were hacked. This drastically reduces their profits. I especially understand their anger over their flagship system being hacked when it is still current on the market.

I'm not going to boycott Sony. I don't wish for the end of the business. Neither do I wish for anyone who ever downloaded a ROM or Jailbroke a PS3 to got to jail.  It appears Sony is just pissed, and acting like it. They may even just be trying to send a message that it is pissing them off to discourage, or bring more attention to it. I'd be pissed if I were them, too, but this is not going to affect what I download.

Yeah, hence this statement. You can't sue somebody just for watching a video (kiddie porn excluded, sorry Tugger  ), so if I were you I would not even worry about that. There is no legal precident that will allow them to sue you for watching a video on how to theoretically Jailbreak a PS3. It's not like anyone went and actually did it  . It's all purely eductational.

the thing is that nothing was stolen in this instance now if he was hacking roms I could understand. but all he dis was make it so the console could run and program the users wanted it to run. if the program was a stolen rom then thats the users fault as the USER STOLE the rom. if however that program was an original homebrew then that should be, and IS, legal.  what this is about is jail breaking, an act that was just legalized for mobile phones, if the act is illegal on everything else then the law is upholding a bullshit double standard.

I also agree that Sony is entitled to their anger, but suing everybody who watched the video makes no sense. That's almost like putting somebody in prison because he saw somebody else committing a crime. Eh, WTF? You commit a crime, I see it and we both go to prison? That makes no sense.

Even though Google has been the most decent company around in the last years, I fear that if Google continues to grow, we will end up with another Microsoft so I am actually boycotting Google. I use only GMail, Google Docs and Adsense and no other of their services. This is also a reason why I am not getting Google Chrome.

There is one funny fact about pirates and hackers, though. Most of them would never buy the product anyway. Virtually companies lose very little money to piracy. A hacker pirates and plays a game. If he can't pirate it, he doesn't buy it instead. Piracy is actually good for the companies because they get more exposure and virtually no losses. And obviously the companies CAN afford it. If they couldn't afford it, they wouldn't spend a few millions to buy a few 100000 copies of their own games only to increase the sales and get on the top lists! Yes, companies do that. EA Games, Activision, Blizzard, all the big guys do it. It's usually part of the marketing budget. :/
