I don't see enough WRPGs here...

...and that's sad. Can anyone posit a theory as to why all these kids want to make JRPGs? What's their appeal?

Is it because most JRPG heroes are kids, the same age as those who want to make them? Is it the whole, resemblance to anime? I don't really understand.

And, yes, I'm trying to open a can of worms, here....

Or maybe because a lot of the people on this website are Westerners. I'm sure that Japanese things are more popular in Japan.

I am done scripting for RMXP. I will likely not offer support for even my own scripts anymore, but feel free to ask on the forum, there are plenty of other talented scripters that can help you.

I'm just saying that when I look through the Projects threads, they tend to be anime-influenced, and have angsty or dumb teenage heroes, and I'm just turned the frak off.

Then again, Final Fantasy XIII kinda killed the JRPG for me.

Is my game too JRPG? D:

If it is, I really tried to avoid that. O:

Subsonic_Noise

My game is pretty far from jrpgs last time I checked.

Subsonic_Noise

Well, many people in a certain age group get in a phase where they think everything from japan is automatically superior. I loved Tales of Symphonia, but I can't stand final fantasy. And Fallout and Mass Effect are among my favourite games of all time. I personally like a good mix of both.

I too like a mix of both but that has nothing to do with why the inde world creates more JRPGs the WRPGs .here is the real problem. WRPGs are to hard to make in RMXP and in general. seriously can you even come up with a concept of how a WRPG would work in RMXP?

and if you do come up with one then consider just how much effort and time you would have to put into it and compare that amount of effort to a typical JRPG RMXP game, RMXP was MADE for JRPGs there aren't many WRPGs made with it for the simple fact that it's not worth the effort I much rather uses a completely different engine that better suits the task, what engine would fit such requirements however is beyond me.
I no longer keep up with posts in the forum very well. If you have a question or comment, about my work, or in general I welcome PM's. if you make a post in one of my threads and I don't reply with in a day or two feel free to PM me and point it out to me.

DropBox, the best free file syncing service there is.
I think that JRPGs are more popular because they cross RPG games with adventure games, and adventure seems to be some sort of universally appealing thing, what with all the movies, books, stories, etc.

I'm sorry, did you say it's too hard to make WRPGs in RMXP? That makes no sense.

It all comes down to the person making it, not the actual engine. :P

Ryex

as I understand it, WRPGS are large open ended RPGS like fallout 3 and mass effect?

Thats the impression I get when I think of Western RPGs. an Elder Scrolls, or Warcraft. Big huge, crazy 100+ hours. I think what you meant when you said it is harder is because RPG Maker is jrpg intended. so even if you made a Wrpg with the rtp, ity'll still be pretty much taken as a jrpg because of the look. so to make a successful Wrpg, you'd need basically custom everything. Which will take alot. am I right?

As I understand, there are a lot of JRPGs like that too?

Because of that, I view a WRPG as one with western themes, or maybe some foreign themes with a big to huge western influence, ect.

Not every game that uses a graphical style such as the one RMXP provides is a JRPG, that thought makes no sense at all.

Take my game for example: it strays far away from any JRPG elements, and stick with a western fantasy theme. I refuse to accept that immediately making a game with RMXP makes it a JRPG, because it is such an absurd thought.

Yeah, those people who perceive such barely know anything about videogames if they're going to label something as it is not just by how it looks graphically.

No, it's not the visual aesthetics that make a game's genre, it's the gameplay. Usually, a WRPG has an extremely variable plot that the player's choices helps determine. WRPGs tend to have more classical design elements, usually having resemblance to DandD. JRPGs level up systems and battle systems are usually very esoteric. WRPGs try to be realistic, while some JRPGs are usually very aware of the fact that they are video games.

WRPGs are more about player immersion; an avatar that's highly customizable at the beginning represents the player. JRPGs tell a story about established characters while the player is on the outside.

Lemme say it again: there are a lot of "JRPGs" that do what "WRPGs" do.

So I guess the FF Crystal Chronicles games are not JRPGs, then, because they have an ABS.
And I guess Penny Arcade: On a Rain Slick Precipice of Darkness is not a WRPG, because it is turn-based. Let's switch 'em, it'll make sense.

No, not really. Such logic makes no sense.

Shin Migumi

I know what you both mean, and trust me I know the difference. But everyone doesn't think like that, trust me I know. a Wrpg in xp or vx will result almost immediately as a Jrpg to the naked eye. It sucks I know, and I never truly seen a Wrpg in XP. So I hope your project truly changes that Tuggernuts (can't say that name without snickering)

Yay, CP isn't among them. xD

I agree with Sub, Ryex (about liking both) and winkio.

Your classic JRPG is Final Fantasy while your classic WRPG is Diabolo. Both categories went 3D and now they are a bit harder to distinguish.

Okay, here is the ultimate difference, I think:

In a WRPG, you're actually playing a role as the PC. In a JRPG, you're watching the cast save the world (after directing the ATB, CTB, whatever esoteric battle system). A JRPG is like a novel with 'RPG elements,' while a WRPG is like a heavily railroaded stint of DandD.

Okay, here is the ultimate difference, I think:

In a WRPG, you're the main character. In a JRPG, a Cloud clone is the main character. There you go!

Because obviously Lloyd (Tales of Symphonia), Emil (ToS 2), Reid (ToE) Yuri (ToV), Seiken Densetsus main characters, Kalas of Baten Kaitos, etc etc are all exactly like Cloud. Seriously, try talking about something you have a clue about.

You're right, we're not doing this...

Anyway, we all have our own personal opinion on JRPGs and WRPGS. We'll leave it at that.

It's gotten out of hand. Lock this please.

Cid

I don't think there's any need to lock the thread. It's an interesting point and I can definitely see where you're coming from, but your assessment of JRPGs has been a little harsh.

The game I'm making is influenced by both. You don't directly assume the role of the main character, but there is an element of free-roam, the story is relatively grounded and none of my characters or attack animations are massively over the top. Ultimately it will be seen as a JRPG, but there's some western heart in there. 8)

Incidentally, I did toy with the idea of making a completely open RPG like Oblivion or Fallout, but the number of possible complications that could arise from not having absolutely everything nailed down beforehand led to a rethink. It also made it many times more difficult to implement a strong narrative, and the involvement of party members in the story would invariably suffer.

Kagutsuchi

If you are looking for a game with a sensible story, you came to the wrong place. Where do I get the resources I need to make a western rpg in rmxp? I dunno \_0.o_/
