Hey! I'm Boredom, The Niche as soon as I figure out how to change my username, but anyway.

Pokemon: Elemental War III

Don't get confused by the title. This'll be the first title in the series, if series it will be. The three is just representative of the fact that it is the third Elemental War.

Background:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Three years after Emerald, Archie had a sudden change of heart. No one is entirely sure what caused it. Archie figured out that there was only one person in the world who could stop him: Brendan. He waited until Brendan left Hoenn to visit his friends Dawn and Lucas in Sinnoh. Then he stormed Mt. Pyre in a wave of blue and seized the Blue Orb. However, he noticed that the Red Orb was already gone. In its place was a note from Maxie, scolding him for breaking his promise.

Kyogre was reluctant, but Archie had the Blue Orb, so she was forced to respond to him. The entire world was flooded as the skies opened up and cried out their sorrows. Maxie was caught and frozen, but he tricked Archie into freezing him together with the Red Orb. Groudon was imprisoned in the centre of the world, under a mountain of rock. However, Groudon was left with just enough power to keep the region where he was being kept above sea level.

Now, seventeen years later, there's only one region left above the watermark. This region is the house of Groudon, Plusia. Although it was never noticed before, it is now the congregation point for all the best trainers in the world. This is where the Earth revolution is based.

Plot:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Brendan's about twenty three years old and he needs a new pair of shoes rather badly. Where our story begins, he's meeting with Arceus at the very gates of heaven. Because life just isn't that easy, Arceus rejects him. Brendan and his torchic, Razablaze, are teleported to the inside of a pelipper, which takes them home.

They return home to the Millhead "mining" outpost, where the revolution is based, under the protection of Mt. Ares, Entei and Moltres. Brendan is greeted by the "hats", the leaders of the outpost, who Brendan despises with every fibre of his body. They order him to return a charizard to prof. Ash (yep. Ash.). When Brendan is there, he pits Razablaze against a pokemon that Ash discovered. While they're fighting, Brendan is suddenly kidnapped by the Water faction.

Razablaze is joined by Charzo, a child of Ash's charizard. The duo venture deeper into Mt. Ares where he meets Phloj, a cyndaquil who tells him that the kidnapper is long gone and guides them to Entei. There, Entei requests that they wake up Groudon and the world moves towards war once more...

Characters:
Spoiler: ShowHide

Brendan

Species: Human
Race: Hoenneese? I don't know.
Age: 33
Height: 6' 7"
Eyes: Purple
He really isn't that important

Spoiler: ShowHide
Razablaze

Species: Torchic
Race: Tundra
Age: 15
Height: Small.
Eyes: Yellow.
Razablaze is our hero. He's full of himself and utterly insane. Brendan met him while exploring the tundra of Plusia. They've been friends ever since.

Spoiler: ShowHide
Charzo

Species: Charmander
Race: Beach
Age: 13
Height: Small
Eyes: Turquoise
He's violent, approaching sadistic, but he's not in it for the killing, just the fighting. He's the clown of the bunch when he's not scratching the hell out of something and he's always willing to make someone smile. Or stop them smiling for good.

Spoiler: ShowHide
Mira

Species: Mudkip
Race: Bog
Age: 14
Height: Small
Eyes: Blue
Mira is the shifty one in the crew. She's got a past that no one really wants to know about and she's perfectly willing to rob the entire crew blind. Except perhaps Razablaze, but she'd rather you didn't talk about that, ok?

Spoiler: ShowHide
Shellshock

Species: Squirtle
Race: Lake
Age: 15
Height: Small
Eyes: Green
Shellshock is extremely resourceful, if slightly reckless. She's committed to removing Kyogre's hold over water pokemon by any means necessary and if you think you can get in her way, I bid you good luck. She's more than capable of bringing out Charzo's soft side, which he consistently tells Razablaze he's not happy about.

And there you have it. The four most important characters and an extra one who I stuck in for the laugh.

EDIT: Because I'm nice, you guys get to learn about a few other characters.

Spoiler: ShowHide
Lucifer

Species: Riolu (Lucario)
Race: Cave
Height: Tall
Eyes: Yellow
Lucifer isn't someone you should piss off. He's one of two people who have ever managed to hold their own while fighting against Razablaze. When he isn't sticking the spikes on his hands into someone, he's usually drunk. Or with Tate, but when he's with her it's usually because she's beating him to a pulp without even blinking. ("Raz, my head hurts!" "That's what you get for having a psychic girlfriend," ;))

Spoiler: ShowHide
Tate

Species: Meditite (Medicham)
Race: Dark
Height Medium
Eyes: No one's sure, they're always closed.
Tate is the worst person in the world for mood swings. rub her up wrong way and she will first beat you to a fine gooey powder, then drive you insane WITH HER MIND!!

Features:
Blizz ABS (Sparkle sparkle!)
Blizz's bestiary and time system. I'm probably gonna add in some more scripts if I find ones that are useful. Or if I get a scripter.
F*ckloads of cool scripts that make it epic! I realise now that games are story driven.
Layered villains, for the first time ever in a pokemon game! Actually, I'm not too sure about fan games.
Pokemon becoming believable instead of the dumb animals they were previously!
Individual pokemon species have different races now, just like actual animals!
A few more pokemon, depending on how good at spriting I can get.

Edit: Systems:
Psionics system allows multiple solutions to puzzles and enemies.
Movement system allows for accessing areas through unconventional means (sliding on vines, anyone?)
Player owned house that can be used to endlessly customise the party, as well as train and several other niceties.

Right, well naturally, the game is way way away from its omega stage. Anyone who'd like to help, there's room enough for all of you! =)

The world map

The first map, where Brendan converses with Arceus (Director: ARCEUS! FACE THE F*CKING AUDIENCE!!!)

Subsequent montage with Brendan and Razablaze in an ocean pelipper. If I can get a spriter, I'm gonna smooth out my enlarged sprites.

The outpost dormitory

The outpost kitchen

The outpost meeting room

And at last, somewhere outside the outpost. Literally, in fact. Millhead

Finally, I'd like to show you two of the new pokemon, cottofly and serpulus. It's typing is: sky. Serpulus is dragon.

Sayonara!

Most people wouldn't believe I'm saying this, but what he said ^. Critique me as much as you like and don't mind my feelings, because a) I don't have any and b) if I did, text on a screen written by people I've probably never met isn't going to hurt them. Do your best, people!  :P

Sase

F*ckloads of cool scripts won't make a game epic, storyline and gameplay do.

The race, new pokemons and pokemon "believeability" things make me think this is a Pokemon game only by the name, the sprites and little by the storyline. But that's fine too.

Also the world map looks REALLY abstract :p

Summary:  Bark >> Bite

Explanation:  You talk a lot of stuff, but from the examples you provided (storyline, features, screenshots), you've shown very little skill/creativity.

I see what you mean, actually. Just out of curiousity, is there an easier way to take screenshots ? (i.e. not print screen) Will upload some actual game screenshots when I get a chance.

THanks for the offer. I'm good for concepts on most of my new pocket monsters, but there's a few I need to work out. Pre-evolution and post-evo of absol is the most immediate one.

Oh yeah. I said up screenshots yesterday...oops. It's actually to do with a script problem. Anyone ever had problems with Game_actor and arguments?

it's script order or compatibility issues

Thanks. It's probably compatibility issues, but i'll try order as well. Watch this post for happiful news!

Happiful News: I'm working on it! In other news, I'm giving blizz-abs a try, to see if it's more compatible than XAS.

Happiful News: Is here! Blizz rocks!...Right, screenies.

The first map:

The following montage, where Brendan and Razablaze are inside a giant pelipper (ocean race!)

And the basement of the millhead outpost, starring Brendan and Razablaze.

^ oops. You can barely see Razablaze in that. Well go check his spritesheet (Original post) and use your imagination!

Sorry about the necropost if it is, but I figure the topic would be officially dead if it was. Sorry about the general lack of activity and all the rest of it, but I've been busy with school, social life, etc. Anyway, I've been working out some concept art. The three elemental teams (magma, aqua and the new one, aero) and the series villains. I shall upload the pics when I finish them.

Map wise, I've been working on the interior of Mt. Ares and the very first map. It's no longer just a panorama! I'm doing my best not to lose my patience with gimp and the new gold and silver sprites.

in the issues department, anyone ever had any problems with events not letting you take control again? I've tried switches, making it a paralell process, putting the whole thing in a conditional branch, using separate event pages, all the obvious stuff. Any suggestions?

Edit: I used another map, without an autorun event. That didn't work, so I managed to fix it by having the player move a square left, then recieve control.

Edit: Reworded original post to generally be better. Shall have a large amount of screenies in a minute or two, watch the original post.

I like this idea. I'm a big fan of the Pokemon series, and in fact, I've been designing a Pokemon game of my own for the last 5 years (on and off, of course). This seems really interesting, but I have to caution you against doing anything too extreme plot-wise. The Pokemon series kind of has a certain system to it, and not following it makes the game seem less like a "real" Pokemon game. Unless, of course, this is meant to be some kind of spin-off-type game, in which case you shouldn't use the regular Pokemon battle system.

Still, I really find this idea interesting, and I think it could make a good game. *levels*

Starrodkirby86

You'd probably want those Pokemon sprites resized in proportion or something. Maybe 200% of its original size would do.

I can easily do this for you, if you'd like. Just give me a folder of all the Pokemon sprites you need resized, slap it in a Compressed Folder, and just send it to me...Wouldn't mind that.

For your message boxes, I personally find that although it's convenient to have multiple lines in one box, I think the whole concept of dialogue would be better if each separate entry was put in each separate message box...

For example:
Message Box: Arceus: Welcome to the heavens, Brendan.

Message Box: Brendan: Arceus? Figured you'd be bigger.

That way, you can add whatever stuff you want in between the two boxes and the flow won't be broken.

What's osu!? It's a rhythm game. Thought I should have a signature with a working rank. ;P It's now clickable!
Still Aqua's biggest fan (Or am I?).

Update!!!

Been working on a few more maps. The swamp where the crew meet Mira being the most important. And an encounter with the series villains. Working out evolution sequences as well, but they're rather annoying.

--transmission terminated--

Not!

@lonely_cubone: I know what you mean, but I honestly find the pokemon games a bit too concept driven. Which is kinda funny 'cos this entire game came from the concept of a  post-emerald dystopia (well, it was sapphire at the time, but I figured Emerald might suit it better). Yeah, it's gonna be fairly spinoffish.

@Starrodkirby: I think that before I do any serious resizing, I need to work out how much the sprites need to be resized. I did a resizing for the legendary dogs by 1.5 because 2 was too big, but they're still too one boxish. I think I agree with your idea about the one speaker a box thing, 'cos that way I can face the boxes if I want to.

It's nice to see comments flowing again, I thought everyone was ignoring me! Not really.
Completely off topic, I GOT A LITERARY AGENT!!! And I'm not even halfway through secondary school  :D!

Go have OCD and arrange all the sprites in folders varying by size! :V:

Sounds like a lot of work. I shall have to look at size comparisons.

Edit: Had an interesting idea. After the credits roll,

Spoiler: ShowHide
kyogre and groudon will still be fighting, so I was thinking that I could occasionally reveal new areas depending on who's winning.

About what's in your spoiler:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Opening new areas after beating a game is always a good thing, and if you've got a story-related reason for these new areas, it's even better. You could make a couple of barren islands (with nothing but rock, since plants would take a while), and some new lakes or rivers or something, both of which can have Pokemon that can't be found anywhere else.

Kirby, I had a go at your suggestion and xp's text editor just makes it painful. An yes, I know about batch text.

Thanks, I'm glad I could help :^_^':. If you want some other ideas of that nature, I'd be happy to help out.

Shining Riku

Niche, I'd suggest that you could use Pokemon Mystery Dungeon sprites for some of the pokemon, but then again you would probably be missing a few sprites like Arceus.

Some of the smaller pokemon sprites are fine as is, but like Starrodkirby86 said you could resize some of the sprites. The boxiness of the sprites can be really annoying sometimes though, I agree.

The Message System isn't that quite versatile, huh?
If you've made not that many message boxes yet, then yeah, this will be a good way to go. It's better to fix your problem now then let it grow into something even more laborious and boring.
Maybe copying all the text in Notepad, then rearranging it to separate entries from there would do.
If there's the whole issue with text cut-offs and stuff, the arrow on the Message Box entry should be safe point before it goes into the gutters. F2 does wonders as well. There's also some UMS's that auto-resize the Message Box Window to accommodate such long characters. ccoa's UMS is one of them.

Your spoiler is a great idea. Keep 'em coming.
