The Scripter's Challenge!

Tossing around a idea for a bit of fun for the community...

The scripts that are published here are usually the efforts of one scripter taking a crack at some feature that they wanted to share.  Once a script is written, there arent usually too many other scripts that directly compete with it, especially when the intent is to accomplish the exact same thing.  Comparing Scripts for Battle Systems, and Fullscreen Scripts for XP.  Not really a fair comparison because of how different they are in their complexity.  But there are multiple different types of Battle System Scripts out there because each accomplishes different things.  But going Fullscreen as a comparison was picked, because, lets face it, how many different ways are there to go Fullscreen?

Here's the point.  Different Scripters will take different approaches to accomplishing the same thing.  Lets say we had a Scripters Challenge.  All the willing participants would write their own scripts that achieve the same goal.  Something that isn't too simple, but isn't too hard either.  Scripts would be due by a Challenge Deadline.  Once the scripts are submitted, we get a chance to judge the quality of each script, and vote for which one is "the best" and explain why.  We could consider things like Stability, Ease of Use, and Compatability, or other suggested topics.  The winner of each contest could receive special recognition for those achievements, even if those contests are small.  It isnt much, but hey, its something!

The Scripters Challenge for that contest could be for a type of script that is in high demand, or something that is a boon to all.  We could write scripts for things that have already been done, or write scripts for totally new ideas.  The Goal of a Scripters Challenge could be suggested by the Community itself.  We could have limits in those challenges, such as only being allowed to Alias currently existing methods, or something like that.  Maybe require zero aliasing and zero redefinitions of existing methods.  Maybe less than 100 lines of code.  I guess it depends on the Challenge as to what those limits would be.

I think I am a decent scripter, but not great by any means.  I sometimes find that I run out of ideas, and have nothing to challenge me.  I want to be a better scripter than I feel I am.  But to achieve that, I need a Goal, and something to challenge me, which helps me increase my potential.  And I think a few of us are probably in the same boat.

Other sites have contests where their members come up with a Game in a Week, or best looking Map Screen.  Why cant we have a bit of fun with the challenges of contests as well?  So, would any of you participate in the contests?  What kinds of scripts do you think would be a good Scripters Challenge for the particpants to try to achieve?

So what do you guys think?

I disagree.  We have tons of different custom menu scripts, custom HUD scripts, message system scripts, item management scripts, etc.

Also, the challenge could be fun, but it might be difficult to find a topic that can be done easily and is interesting to everyone.

Each one of those scripts accomplishes different things, usually.  One menu script will be different than another menu script as far as what they do in some way shape or form.  Just as the HUDS are different as well as the message scripts, and just about everything else.  Some Msg Systems use Bubbles, some add Pictures, some add both.  Not that being different is bad in any way shape or form, I was just curious how different scripters would go about accomplishing the same goal by being able to compare the differences.  So im not sure I understand what you disagree with.  The real scripts we have available range from quite similar to completely different, but none of them are exactly the same.

I do totally agree that finding an appropriate topic could be very challenging, also because everyone has a different skill level!  Maybe a first challenge could be something fairly easy in order to allow as many people to participate as possible.  One idea I came up with for a Challenge would be based on an old rpg game.  Two of the characters were Robots, and the Robots regenerated several hit points with every step the player took, but could not be healed by normal means.  As a standalone script, some people might have use for it, many wouldnt.  But as a Challenge, it could be accomplished without too much effort, but hopefully would be fun!

If that were the Challenge, would you be interested in taking a swing at it?

The contest does sound like a fun idea, but here's the thing. This is just like every other competition we've had here on Chaos Project.

A) We don't get enough contestants.
B) We do get a bunch of contestants, but they end up dropping out.
C) The contestants that do stay, usually don't finish or forget to submit it. Thus leaving us with one or two full submissions.

With something like RPG Maker, it's hard to to stay motivated. Once you start exploring outside the boundaries of RPG Maker, e.g. other game engines, other programming languages, it's difficult to go back to an inferior engine. Especially if you can make a better one yourself.

I'm not saying this is a bad idea and I'm not trying to discourage you from trying to do this thing. I'm just pointing out issues we've had in previous contests and competitions on this site. They never ended up working out the way everyone hopes.

Yeah, the fact we don't have a lot of people who would be willing to participate makes this hard to implement.

Lurk around the script requests board. Help people with their scripts. That's how I got better. If something sounded easy to do, even if I had no idea where to begin, I still looked into it. And I'm still learning new tricks and ideas on how to implement features while being an asset to the community.

Yeah I mean I practically own that section with as often as I ask for help :naughty:
I would like to see some kind of contest here though :P I'd enter this depending on how difficult the request is lol.

Alright, new idea.

What if we had something like "Script of the Month" / "Year" Award that could be used to give both Scripters and their Scripts special recognition?

That sounds cool. I nominate Heretic for his cloud altitude script (he probably didn't make it this month, but whatever).

Probably a no go thing. Discussions of awards on this forum has already been discussed quite a few times.

Again, not trying to discourage something. And the same problems as I mentioned before would still apply here. Activity here just isn't as it used to be. It wouldn't get much attention. We don't have enough new scripts or active users to pull this off with.

If you guys are proud of you recent accomplishments, put them in your signature.  You can even put an image of a medal or a trophy, and link to the relevant topic.  This is not sarcastic, I actually think it's a good way to show off some of your recent, or even not so recent work.

EDIT: actually, if we made a few template images for the forum, you guys could personalize them for each individual thing you want to put in your signature.  Does this sound like a good idea?

ThallionDarkshine

I actually really like this idea. Whenever I finish a script, I'm really proud of it and want to show it off to the world.

winkio

Yeah, I know what you are talking about, and that is the type of enthusiasm I want to see around this forum.  I'll make a topic in the News section where we can gather suggestions for the template images.
