Final Fantasy IV XP/VX

Okay, this is actually a project out of pure respect to the Final Fantasy series, this one to a game I feel shows the true beauty of the Final Fantasy series, a classic among classics, Final Fantasy IV.

What inspired me to do this?
Simply, I was going through my SNES cartridges and found my copy of FFIV (sold as FFII in the United States until its re-release and the release of the true FFII in the US).  This game not only inspired me to further my work in Chaotic Fury, but to begin this great new endeavor:  a remake of the old Final Fantasy IV.

The game will include maps remade to the very last pixel tile, although they will be graphically improved compared to the days of the SNES.  The game will use newly retooled and remixed music from various artists, furthering the tribute to a classic.  I will also retain the original battle system, the Active-Timed Battle System, otherwise known as the RTAB (Real Time Active Battle).  The game will be done using much more friendly and accurate translation (Although I shall retain the Spoony Bard line, no worries), and shall be a way of introducing a classic to newer generations who cannot afford the price tag of the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary release of Final Fantasy IV for the DS.

I hope to have a demo prepared some time in the future, this project is a labor of respect and I refuse to release a demo out until it meets what is beyond acceptable.

Prepare yourselves, because if you haven't played FFIV yet, you will fall in love!

You already know my love for Final Fantasy 4 over in IRC, Gax. :^_^: So I truly appreciate this project. However, since it is your game, and it's a remake, I want you to add in your own items too, like how the Game Boy Advance version has those extra dungeons or the DS version has the...Hm, I'll just say Rydia's paper-like monster that you can fight online.

Add something on your own, I'm not suggesting anything in particular, but it'd be really cool.

Now, if you're making a remake, you better know all the secrets in the original, that's from secret passages, hidden easter eggs, and all of that good stuff. GameFAQs is always a good source. XD I wish you the best luck.

I'm getting maps from everywhere, using various resources from game hint sites, and seeing if I can find those old Nintendo Powers that have all the maps to FFIV with all the secrets.

It's likely in the future I may do a remake of FFVI, but I really wanna do this one first.

I may add something of my own later on, but I first need to get the main game down, along with all the stuff from the original game.  I figure a few new things I may add though:

-Special Summons
-The Lunar Trials from FFIV Advance
-Dev Room #2 (Featuring all people who help in this project)
-Another porno mag?  Well, maybe, havent' decided on that one yet ^^

The entire storyline will be in tact.  I'm using the SNES and GBA versions to reference the story, providing a more accurate script.  I'm also using SNES and WSC maps as reference.

I'm considering openning this project to a group mind, and I'll be looking for people to fill the following positions:

-Resource ripper/collector/makers
-Scripters
-Mappers
-Eventers

I'll likely make a recruitment thread later, but until the project takes off (currently on hiatus due to Chaotic Fury work), I'll listen to suggestions and consider different ideas, but keep in mind the original game will stay completely in tact.

The stripper in Baron, oh, that was funny. I just had to patch my GBA ROM to see that...and I wondered what it was like. o_o
Is the game going to have the same action and sort like the real Final Fantasy, from the Hue-changeable windowskin to the Final Fantasy font (SNES or GBA). These questions are really minor, but I wonder how faithful an RMXP Remake can be.

i actually cant wait to see this, i have never played the originals, only FFVII,FFVIII (didnt get far), FFIX (NOT FAR AT ALL), And FFX. Oh and some of the original tactics. But I still cant wait!

Btw, I'm going through translation notes of FF4 from Japan and the Fat Chocobo's original name was Debu Chocobo.  Debu Chocobo roughly translates to Lardass Chocobo.  The Frying pan used to wake up Yang was Ai no Frypan, which means Frying Pan of Love.

Hmm, I think I'll stick to the name Fat Chocobo, because that's the name used through most FF games and sounds better than Lardass.

Okay, for the time being, the project is being done in VX

Here are my reasons for doing this:

-VX's map editor is much more friendly for this at the moment (Ability to view paralax backgrounds in editor), I have to DOUBLE the size of nearly EVERYTHING in XP in order to have the correct look.  If I were using custom tilesets, that'd be a different story, but with the standard tilesets, recreating IV in XP is a heavy chore that will yield seriously BAD results.
-VX is a bit more user friendly to this project, and a lot of the systems are fairly identical to IV, I'll just need a custom RTAB and menu system, and probably a custom save/load menu.
-I honestly don't feel like running yet another XP project at the moment.

Good news is, I've actually completed a few maps and will release a beta as soon as I get the scripts together and the system setup.  Sooner I get the scripts, sooner this project will have a demo out.

I'm figuring the frist demo will go through til the destruction of Mist, so not exactly a LONG demo, but a fair one.

I'll keep you guys updated.  Also, those who say I should focus on CF, my main reason for doing this is that IV was one of the games that inspired me to take up game design, and I'm hoping remaking this classic will help me in getting back that drive to pushed me to make Chaotic Fury in the first place. =)

Oh yeah, I liked 4 a lot too, although the ultimate armor sidequest thing with the pink puffs was annoying.  Perhaps make it more... possible?  And I can definitely see how VX would be a lot more useful.  Good luck!

Okay, let me explain how I'm remaking these maps first.

I found a site that gives ALL of the game's maps from the SNES.   I then DOUBLE the size of these maps so 1 tile on the map is the same size as a tile in the RPG Maker...well, here's the thing...

After doulbing the size of the OVERWORLD map, the pixel size is 8142x8142, which translates to 256x256, 32 pixel tiles.

Now, let's have Gaxxy explain the specs of his current machine so you people can understand why RMVX CRASHES when I try to use this as a paralax background so I can trace the maps:

nVidia GeForce 7300 GT 256MB Cache
1xDDR400 512 MB RAM (If I use any more than this, I get read/write errors for some reason and the computer pretty much acts like it has ADD)
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Processor running at 2 gHZ, single core
Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition SP3
500 GB SATA HDD (I don't wanna remember the specs for this right now, not really important)

That's pretty much where I'm at.  I just completed a LARGE amount of work completing Baron Castle, and I'm still not finished.  I also have the outside parts of Kaipo and Baron, I was just hoping to maybe get some of the Overworld map completed (Namely, I need to create the area around Baron that leads to Mist.

This also gets me thinking...This is the Overworld Map to the entire game, where you'll ride chocobos and airships alike, as well as walk...

FUCK!  Lack of ABSEAL for VX might make shit VERY difficult...

I gotta lot of work ahead of me still.  Even when the Database is done, I still need the scripts (Yo, scripters who are interested in creating  an FFIV Battlesystem + CMS, I can get you the combat algorythms, I found them on GameFAQs).

When this project is complete, I'll also release a Final Fantasy 4 RTP which will include resources, maps, scripts, etc.  The only things it wont include are my own contant, nor will it include my version of the FFIV dialogue script (sorry, but I gotta keep something to myself).

Though be forewarned...if I find some jackoff out there making a copy of my remake and saying that THEY were the ones who made it...there's going to be some SERIOUS hell to pay, I'll just remove the RTP from my site and unleash a homunculus army on them or something...
