Unable to open up RMXP or play RMXP games due to error...

Ugh, I'm having problems opening up my copy of RMXP. It's the legal English version, registered, and I'm on Windows Vista.

So, just the other day, the program was working perfectly fine; the only other problem I'd ever had was the nTitles error, but that was resolved many months ago. Anyway, the next time I try to start it up, it says "RPG Maker XP has stopped working; Windows is checking for a solution to the problem..." It didn't even start up the maker or show the RMXP logo. I tried running the app as an administrator, but I got the same error. I restarted my comp, still no change. I tried running the program in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)", and that still didn't make a difference. I also tried repairing the program via the official installer and Programs and Features; I tried reinstalling it completely using the both of the said methods; I tested it out in a different directory; I even ran system restore from three different points since the date that I know that it stopped working, and that STILL didn't do anything to change the error. I've googled extensively for a solution and I can't seem to find anyone who has solved this problem.

Turns out I even had a registered version of RMXP on another computer, and it worked fine there. I put the RPGXP.exe from that computer onto mediafire and then downloaded it onto my primary computer and replaced mine. Same error. I tried it in a different directory, too, but still nothing.

Thanks in advance, I'm totally stumped right now and would really like to get RM up and running again.

There has to be something wrong with the environment RMXP is running. I know you have done System Restore, but perhaps there is something that's killing off RMXP? Try and think of anything new that might have happened pre-crash.

(Oh and I guess it wouldn't be a bother to post your computer specs? Maybe that can help...doesn't hurt, right?)

I am really not sure what might have caused it. I opened it up earlier the same day and it worked fine. I guess I closed it after that, and tried to start it up later and that's when the error started.

Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention, whenever I try to play a RMXP game via the executable, an error saying "RGSS Player has stopped working" comes up and makes me close the program. The screen in the game window doesn't load, it just stays black until the error pops up seconds later.

OK, I can't back up my reasons for this suggestion, but get a new RGSS102E.dll and replace it in your C:\Windows folder (or was it C:Windows\System32 ?).

Another thing I would do, is get a DirectX update. Something tells me it could be it.

a computer don't change files etc ore prevent programs to work in a normal work day.
my bet since you only surfed the net is a Virus

try running your anti virus and anti spyware programs
(if they also not start up i'm sure its 1)

Alright, I replaced the RGSS102E.dll with the one from my other computer (the one that RMXP works on), but, as I expected, no change. I ran a full system scan with AVG Free and found 47 tracking cookies, but that was it. I removed them.

After many failed attempts, I finally got DirectX installed... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=2DA43D38-DB71-4C1B-BC6A-9B6652CD92A3&displaylang=en (from this address... if that makes any difference)... and, of course, no luck.

Try running it in compatibility mode for Window 2000 and 98 respectively...


And finally... I don't know exactly which program to use or where to get it, but try running a registry error fixer... (DO RESEARCH on them first... the last thing you need is a trojan... or a magnum XD)

Anyway... it could be that there is an error in a section of your registry and reinstalling doesn't fix it... or, it could be that, for whatever ridiculous damn reason, Vista decided to firewall your RMXP... I can't fathom why it would do this, but look through your firewall and virus protection filters to be sure there is nothing blocking it for some god awful reason...

Lastly, you could try upgrading to Windows XP of 99 dollars... (While piracy is illegal already, Windows piracy is just moronic, since it makes everything nigh impossible to use... this is, of course, hearsay however...)

I won't say anything for Windows 7, as I know nothing about it, and I won't vouch for it, as it looks too much like Vista... I'm not even sure if it's legally obtainable anyway... just go get WinXP and all your problems will magically disappear.

Tried it in the other compatibility modes... nada.

I installed CCleaner and cleaned out a whole bunch of "problems" with my registry... but that didn't do any good.

I added RPGXP to the list of exceptions in Windows Firewall. Nothing.

I've wanted to downgrade to XP since the very beginning... I've always hated Vista. I don't really understand how I would go about doing that, though... I'm not quite sure if I want to go and spend $100 on it, either.

I'd take a look at graphics drivers, make sure none of them glitched out.  Try rolling some of the graphics ones back.

the only thing i can think of would be to make absolutely sure that ll your important data on you computer (documents , rpgmaker games, tax stuff ect.) is all backed up and then do a factory reset which will rest the computer to the state in which you got it.

but I would use that as a last resort as it formats you computer and returnes it to factor settings, basicly as if you just got a brand new comp. and you will lose every thing now backed up externally from your computer.

and even as a last resort I would not suggest it. and as I'm not sure you comp comes with a factory reset.... ya best forget I even presented it as an option.

As things seem to be going, it probably wouldn't work even if I wiped my whole system, rofl

Though yeah. That probably would fix it. But I'm not really in the mood for rebuilding my whole computer just to get RPG Maker back up... I mean, I do want it back, but seriously... that would be a lot of work just to fix one thing.

Out of curiosity...if you have free time, can you see if RPG Maker VX works for you? They're bound to be coded in similar ways, and they even use the same keygen. I don't know if this is going to lead to anything, but I'm just asking this purely for curiosity.

Ah, if you haven't done much already within your computer or it's already a big mess as is, then a reformat can do greatly.

And ooh, I have a model 6400f and RPG Maker works just fine here...o_o

And what IS the exact error it gives you? Or is there no information other than "It stopped working"? D:

Edit: Okay, I downloaded VX... turns out that it DOES work. Starts up with no problems.

*sigh* I really wish I can help you here, but this is just one of those strangely frustrating problems...No actual error code, no supposed reason to it crashing, nothing. >.<

Changing the OS might actually be a good bet, if you don't mind. Of course I mean either downgrading to XP or going to Windows 7. OK, you can always reformat as mentioned before.

But there has to be something different about the current computer you're using causing this incompatibility with RMXP. ...This is on a whim, but maybe there's a program open that's preventing RMXP from doing stuff? Check the Processes List for anything that you deem is safe enough to remove (If you have good judgment for such things) and try...

Again, I'm sorry for not being of much help to you. Good luck in the future and hopefully this won't arise again. :S

Well I remember this happeneing to me so what I did was backup all my data on flash drives and cd's then I wiped the hard drive, redownloaded all the programs I had because I kept it in a list and rpg maker xp worked again.

The same thing happened to me, I started up RPGXP and it closed and said RPG Maker XP Has stopped working. So thats what I did. Backed up all my data, made a list of all programs I downloaded, reformatted my hard drive and yea it worked again.

So thats how I fixed it and I dont know another way around it.

it sounds like regastry error... any onk know where the key for rmxp ar kept?

if you find them just uninstall rmxp completely (rgss AND rmxp, they are two different programs) then if the key are still there as they often are after program uninstalls remove them the best way would be to run ccleaner on the registry. then reinstall rgss and rmxp and see if it works

edit:

do this open you control panel and select clasic view if you have not already. then open programs and feachers, then uninstall rmxp and rgss (they will be two different programs), then check the directories you installed them in to be sure all the files are gone, also be sure that the rgss dll is gone. then click start>run and type in regedit and press enter. this will open the regestry editer (be carful done delete or modify any thing if you don't know what you are doing).
on the levt will be a folder tree go to

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Enterbrain

there check to be sure that the folders RGSS and RPGXP do NOT exist if the DO delete them.
do the same in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Enterbrain

here if the folders RGSS or RPGXP exist delete them

then re install RGSS and RMXP and see if it works

*sigh* I just followed all your steps precisely, Ryex, deleted everything and got rid of the registry files, reinstalled it all and the error is STILL there.
